    Shelf life of ammo?

After the passing of my wifes father , I was left with a pile of ammo reloaded by my wifes dad. The ammo is stored in ammo cans . If there is a shelf life for ammo, how long can it sit in cans and function as it is supposed too?Second question: Is there a law on how many rounds can be kept at your home here in Califorina? Thanks Fellow Gunners

Sorry to hear about your father in law passing away.

As long as the ammo are stored in ammo cans that have good seal it should be good for a very long time. But do open them and check the ammo's condition if corrosion is present just in case.

Now as far as ammount of ammo stored in resident, I have no idea. I do plead ignorance on that part. I'll leave that to those who are more knowledgable on the subject.

I have used plenty of WWII surplus ammo without problems. I have used ammo I reloaded 15 years ago with no problems. As long as it has been stored under reasonably good conditions, does not show corrosion or other obvious problems, it should be fine. Of course another question - are you confident your father-in-law was a careful and experianced reloader? I hesitate to use any reloads that I have not reloaded myself.

As to the amount of ammo allowed, to the best of my knowledge, there is no law restricting private ownership quantities, but I am not a lawyer.

Even if the ammo is still shootable there is no way I would shoot random reloads even if they came from my father in law. Guns are expensive, ammo is cheap.

+1 no way I'd trust my father-in-law, his vision sucks

Sell it for cash, out of security camera view. Wear a disguise and make sure the buyer doesn't get your license plate or a snapshot of you with his cell phone. Or sell it for components with a signed receipt.

To the other questions, no limit on amount that can legally be imposed, and the stuff lasts forever if kept well.

I've shot surplus ammo from the 40's, and .30-30 from the 20's. No issues.

Shelflife for ammo is longer than you're likely to be alive.
