First time shooting my reloads through Chrony

So I got my first chronograph just after I started reloading and I had enough time to shoot a few rounds through it a couple days ago. I was thoroughly impressed! My goal for .40 was to get a 180gr bullet out of my Glock 27 at around 1000 fps and with 7.1gr of Hodgdon Longshot I got an average of 1035 fps.

What really impressed me most was that Hodgdon's published max is 8.0gr, and I have absolutely no high pressure signs on the brass whatsoever so I'm hopeful of going even faster!

I was almost afraid I wouldn't be able to hit my 180gr - 1000fps goal being that my test gun only has a 3.5" barrel, but this was like a birthday present!

I had worked up to 7.7gr of Longshot just before the range trip, and those were pushing 1100fps!

I'm just really excited that my reloads are doing well and wanted to show off . I'll be doing a YouTube video of both the loading and Chrony shooting probably this weekend so I have something to show for my work.

Nope! But boy was I nervous! I've been working on not flinching, and this seems to have finally cured it lol.

I blew the diffusers off mine last weekend. I didn't hit them, but the muzzle blast from my Garand was enough to send one of them flying. Guess I need to set it up a little further out.

          OP- Good work!

Yeah the Chrony is nice to have, especially for someone just starting to reload.

I have no worries with the rifle, but using the chony with handguns take a little more care.

I always shoot from a bench rest and focus on shooting through the center of the triangle rather than at a particular target. What I am trying to do is get a good feel of speed and concistency with a particular load. The accuracy part can be worked on with the chrony out of the way.

My particular flinch is downward so its particularly dangerous for the chrony. That's why I shoot off of a bench rest when using it.

The wire rods slowly back off from muzzle blast even at 12 feet out, due to the bowed tension of the diffusers. Just push them back in during each range recess. If it's overcast or real shady you don't need the diffusers either.

My thought process was exactly what you just said. Down to the direction of flinch. Perhaps too exact... GET OUT OF MY HEAD!

I was going conservative for my 1st time, and I was getting probably like 1080 on average.

                      I am very happy my lady's SR-9 didn't explode.

Good to hear others are having fun with the new joy I found, too (reloading).

They do say a chrony is vital to really understanding your reloads. I've wanted one for years, but just haven't done it. Yet. At the present rate of procrastination, it doesn't look hopeful for the future, either.

I just got one last week, Midway had them on sale. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet and this thread has me all worked up to get it out to the range now!!

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

It really is. I always thought they were out of reach for me with my budget, but mine only cost 100 bucks. Not that it's super cheap, but not too difficult to save up for.

DO IT! Since I couldn't wait the 3 hours from the time the UPS guy dropped it off to the time I could go shooting, I took it out in the back yard and shot some airsoft and pellet guns through it.
