    Magnetic ammo?

I'm just curious. What is the issue about whether ammo is magnetic or not?
in my 61 years I've never heard of it. who cares?

Steel jacketed bullets can cause sparks and fires under dry weather conditions.

It's not the ammunition that is magnetic it is the ferrous steel/iron in the core or jacket.

It can spark and cause fires.

Rocks can shave off little pieces of steel which will ignite due to the friction involved. These are called "sparks" (think flint and steel). These sparks can ignite dry tinder such as dry grass or brush and cause brush fires or forrest fires.

"attracts a magnet" is I believe the proper term, although anything ferrous can become magnetic I think they are just talking about anything with steel in it.

The "magnetic ammo" term seems like it drifted away from the correct terminology.

Some ranges won't allow ammo that will attract a magnet.

Mostly has to do with the damage to the steel targets by the magnet-attracting (ferris) jacket and/or core. Copper and other softer, non-ferris metals aren't as hard on them. Some enterprising young shooters clean the black paint off AP bullets and pass them off as ball, so they had to start using the 'magnetic' check.

When I was a kid I thought the bullet hunted out magnetic objects to target.

Now that's funny. Wrong.g but funny. The main reason is fire danger. As far as damaging steel targets go, solid brass bullets can penetrate more than APs.

ive always wondered why some stainless is magnetic and some not how can you add someting to iron and make it not attractive to a magnet and why cant they add that substance to the bimetal bullet jackets

Here's a thread which shows why it is a serious problem.

Hornady makes Zombie-max ammo, has anyone thought of marketing magnetic ammo as Robot-killer? You know, for when the machines rise up against their human masters

Depends on the magnet as well. I have some unspellable and unpronouncable magnets that will pick up any stainless fastener you care to try. They will also stick right to my stainless S&W wheelguns.
