    Lee Classic Turret Press...

I'm thinking about purchasing one and was wondering what people thought?

Price seems very reasonable and the simplicity is very attractive.

What other similar presses should I also consider?

Can I use this press to reload .308?

I used one for over 20 30 years loading 308, 300 WSM, 243 and handgun rounds. I'm about to mount it back on my bench because I need it to start loading 458 Win Mag.

Edit: sometimes I forget how old I am.

I just ordered one from http://factorysales.com/index.html. I haven't had a chance to set it up yet, but it appears to be a pretty solid set up. I bought this over the Deluxe because of the ability to do rifle ammo.

so the Classis model cannot do rifle ammo? I saw a video on you tube where the turret has to be used in manual mode or the tip of a .308 would interfere with the rotation of the turret.

I ordered the classic because it WILL do rifle ammo and the Deluxe won't.

why wont the Deluxe do rifle ammo?

from what I am reading the difference between the two presses is the material they use (Iron vs. Aluminum).

Google a picture of the two and you will see a definate difference in the body.

The classic press is the best one in their line of turret presses IMO. Its a work horse. Its great, very solid. It fits my reloading needs perfectly. And for the price, you cant beat it. I also got my press from Factory Sales.

I have the alum frame four holer -- delux I guess -- It does fine for rifle cart up to 06 -- a short 120/130 gr bullet is ok but a 180+ is a mite long.
                  no worries with 308 - 30/40 - 7.65x54. though.
I do like the press very well even with it's length limits.
Probably could add spacers to the three risers to solve that issue.

I'm getting ready to buy one too. Had a Lee years ago and then got out of reloading. Friends keep telling me to get a Dillon but for as much (little) as I will reload the Lee is more than enough for me at about 1/3 the price.

For those that may be considering the Deluxe turret, be aware that the primer disposal is the weak part of this operation. It directs the primers into that large base with no easy way to get them out. Wasn't a problem for me as I deprimed on my SS prior to tumbling. The classic directs the primers down the center of the ram to the plastic tube for easy disposal. Everything else is the same and as has been mentioned the Deluxe will do rifle within certain limits. You can't go wrong with the classic turret.

I'm curious about your statement re: the Lee Deluxe not loading rifle ammo.

I have used my 4 hole Deluxe to load approx 1000 rds of 45-70, Hornady cases, using both 405gr hardcast lead and 325gr Hornady FTX boolits. I have yet to have any issue in the loading, and have yet to experience a FTF.
In fact, the 45-70 rounds are virtually identical in ease of loading as the 44mag or 45LC I also use the press for.

When I was researching various presses to buy, I was told the Lee Pro 1000 will not load rifle ammo.

Sorry, I guess it was a mis-statement. It will do most rifle ammo. From what I read, doing .30-06 was cutting it close and I have an '06 and didn't want to chance it.

I bought a Lee Classic Turret back in October. I had never loaded a round before that. After lots of reading and watching some instructional videos, I was able to successfully setup and load both .45 ACP and 9 mm. I am happy to report that I have not bought a box of factory ammunition, other than .22, in 5 months!

Go with the Classic Turret and have fun!

If your loading for precision you may want to look at a real solid single stage press, otherwise it's a great press. Loaded 4000 .223 and about 600 .40 s&w with mine so far without a hiccup. Haven't bought ammo since.
