I've had good luck with Federal XM193 (lake city)

It is cheap, put holes in paper, reload-able, no steel core (some ranges don't allow steel core bullets), and not too dirty. It is 5.56, not .223, so it'd be worth checking what is stamped on your barrel (.223 in 5.56 is OK, otherway around not so much).

Otherwise the commercial packs of Federal from Wal-mart. Brass isn't as nice reloading wise. I've also had good luck with Prvi Partizan (PPU).

Other target shooting ammo that I know are popular are PMC (dirtier than most), Wolf (Steel Case), Tula, etc No personal experience, just what I've heard. So far the price difference hasn't been enough compared to XM193 (twenty something cents a round vs low thirty cents).

PMC out of my rifle is very inaccurate. about 4 moa. My reloads from the same rifle are 1 moa.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "target" shooting. Are you looking for accuracy or just plinking?

Ill say what i usually say: the cheapest you can find. If youre allowed to shoot wolf i would be all over that, if not federal or PMC. If your just plinking i guarantee the ammo you wont notice the difference in ammo

            Accuracy is important.

If I were you Dgon I would buy each brand and bullet style of .223 you can get your hands on (20 round box) and test for accuracy and function. Now what type of rifle are you planning to shoot the .223 out of?

With my AR that has a NATO chamber and 1/7 rifling twist I average between 2"-3" at a 100 yards with the PMC, Remington, and Winchester fmj 55 grain using open sights and rifle is resting on sandbags.

My single shot bull barrel rifle that has 1/12 rifling twist averages 1/2" -3/4" at a 100 yards of handloaded 52 grain match using a scope and sandbags.

                Rifle Type: Colt SP6920

Sounds good. 2"-3" at a 100 yards with PMC, Remington, and Winchester fmj 55 grain. Thanks for the tolerance. I'll shoot for that.

I agree with ireload. Try a box before you buy a load.
My Colt AR (original) absolutely will not chamber the 2nd shell with any Russian ammo, Wolf, Tula etc. Maybe it is telling me to "Buy American".

                    dgon27,

I too prefer PMC ammo over the others due to it's consistant produced quality but then again these days of ammo being priced so high I almost shoot anything as long as it's non-magnetic AND non-corrosive.

Our problem all over is that ammo especially 223 Remington cost way too much and has almost pushed me away from shooting it all together. In the near future IF the price worsens I may just re-start shooting exclusively 22 rimfire ammo again.

Match target ammo or just plinking ammo?

For Match I love Federal Gold Medal Match or Black Hills.

For plinking I like PMC or XM193.
