    Sound Proof Tumbler

I live in an apartment, so I dropped by home depot and bought some sound dampening insulation. It gets hot when I leave it completely covered, so I try to leave some room for air. I leave it on while I'm gone; it's barely noticeable in the next room with the door open.

Anyone done something similar? The material was real cheap, $10 for a huge panel (probably enough for 2 tumblers). That's the box the tumbler came in!

you need to leave some room for air to help cool the motor and i dont think i would leave with it on for fear of fire just be safe

clever idea! I'm going to try the same and add a small hole for an air pump/tube or usb fan.

There is no such thing as sound proof unless you build an anecohic chamber.

In the past I built a sound insulated box for my tumbler, however the lack of airflow killed the motor after a few months.

With that close proximity (sound absorbing board and box) your motor would eventually over heat. You'll need more room around the tumbler at least 3" and some 1" holes at the lower part of the box to draw cool air from the outside while the open top you've did lets the warm air out.

I've done a similar set up with vent holes but used thick carboard that i've duct taped together. Worked for me and kept my neighbors from complaining the 4 years I've lived there.

I would need something like that for the huge Dillon vibrator. Not neighbors, but just a little quieter when I'm reloading as well and without wearing ear protection.

Ah, yes... I should probably give it some more room. I'm going to go hunt for another box. Usually I leave the window open (it's about a foot away), so the cold(er) air breezes in.

Easy Solution TEFC Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled.

Or, in other words. Put a cross-venting fan setup in. You can used open cell foam for inlet and outlet damping.

You don't want to burn out your motor.

My buddy just got into reloading and bought the Berrys tumbler. That thing whispers it is so quiet.

Hrm maybe we should design something with a built in fan. Any Interest?

i guess if you had an old refrigerator it might work.

Anyway, I have a lyman tumbler (2200? midsized), it works very well and isn't terribly noisy. The large midway tumbler I have doesn't seem to agitate the brass as well, but it works, and it is very loud. I just leave them in a separate storage room next to my garage and shut the door.

I wonder how much louder an insulated box would be with a fan added. Maybe, if the box had something like a 3-4" pvc elbow off the side with insulation or padding on the inside of the elbow, it would let the air flow but adsorb some of the sound waves.

I stick mine on top of a peice of ply wood wrapped in a towel, and a couple towels under it, on top of a box, then shove it in the closet.

Neighbor hasn't complained, and I don't notice it much.

Get yourself a nice thick (3-4") piece of foam for underneath the tumbler. That will stop the vibrations from transferring to the floor, which could annoy your neighbors.
