The new hulls are shinier, slicker and a deeper red than the old AA's. If you look down inside, you should be able to see that the base wad and the hull body are separate pieces.
FYI, the new handicap hulls are a darker gray than the old silver hulls.

13. How can I get a good crimp with the new 12-gauge AA high strength hull?
Winchester has designed the new 12-gauge AA high strength hull to reload with the same reloading data as the old AA hull. However, on some reloading machines, even though the components and reloading data are the same, there may need to be a minor crimp station adjustment made. Please contact your reloading machine manufacturer if you need assistance adjusting your crimp station. Shooters have found that after making a slight adjustment to the reloading machines good quality crimps and long reloading life are consistently obtained with the new AA high strength hull.

I bought a large lot of used AA hulls a while ago - new and old. I use a Lee Load All II, so your arm is the adjustment. I haven't noticed anything in particular between the two types.

Contact www.downrangemfg.com There is a pink wad DRA-12 (I think) that is better suited to reload in the new HS hull. Depending on what your payload is you might get "case buckling" just above the case head if you use your old wads. Or you will get bad crimps from the wad being to high. I gave up on those hulls. I was given 1000 of the "early" batch hulls and that insert would crack and come loose. That potentialy could cause an obstruction in the barrel.

Then when it came time to reload, I would have to inspect the hull with a flashlight and it became to tedious after a few hundred hulls.

As best as it appears there were a couple changes to the AAHS over time.

first version had the AA in the box on the tube like the old ones had, but no HS marking on the brass base

2nd variant had no box around the AA on the tube, and no marking on the brass base

3rd version, and I believe it to be the current one, has the HS stamped into the brass on the base

Several folks have indicated that perhaps there was minor changed made to the base wad at the time of each marking change.

I have the second version. AA marking on the tube is not in a box like on my older cases, and no HS on the brass.

I load these hulls all the time. I transitioned from the old style to the new style using the same components and yes can use the same recipe but you have to change some adjustments like wad pressure and the crimp close and taper. Before I fine tuned it, I was getting a ring on the outside of the hull right at the front of the base wad. This was a sign of the hull wall was collapsing after the final crimp. I must say that I prefer the old style than the so called "High Strenght" hull. Like said before, you can tell there the new style by a H.S stamped on the base of "Most" of them and to look inside to see the base wad. Some base wads are red like the hull and some are white....

I use anything that is marked AA, although I do prefer the original AA's. I use the same components and settings on my MEC equipment without any issues.
