    Re-using Decapped Live Primers

    Hey guys,

I loaded a bunch of .223 using wolf primers and it's not working out. They keep blowing out around the indentation where the firing pin hits. I'm not risking my rifle and/or my personal safety when CCI 41s and Federal Match primers are working fine.

I'm going to de-cap them but I was thinking I could use them in .30 Carbine and they would be okay, due to the lower pressure. Once I decap the live primers, can I use them again, or is it going to move the compound out of the way of the anvil?

    Thanks for the input, guys...

I would discard them. Primers are cheap enough, and I wouldn't worry about re-using it.

I've decapped and reused many primers, i just move the press a little more slowly and gently than when decapping a spent primer.

Hum, I thought that they would not press fit as tight. But if you guys say so...

Not sure what type of press you are using, but if it's a Dillon with the tube type primer magazine, you aren't making the safest decision.

Like with any other decision, ask yourself 'what's the worst that can happen?' then decide if it's worth it.

                I wouldn't do it....not worth the risk.

I would reuse, but check to make sure that the priming pellet is not broken.
I can't speak to the dillon problem but regular primer tools should be fine.

It's not a problem if you slowely punch out the primer, just to keep it from being damaged, but I have never had a problem reusing them.

Being less observant than I would like to be, I have had a few large batches where I had to decap. Being a cheap screw, I always reuse my decapped live primers.

Those explosions usually happen during priming. Not during decapping...

If you try to force a primer in when it's off-kilter, the anvil can be forced down into the cup, thus igniting the mixture and detonating primers directly next to it (then, the domino effect happens up the tube). But yeah, that's usually on the priming stage...

...and yes, I am using a Dillon.

I've decapped all sorts of 308Win, 30-06, 9mm, 223 rounds. And I've reused almost every single one.

Which primers are you using, the wolf small rifle or the wolf 223 small primer? I've got about 5k of the Wolf 223 small primers and I never experienced any issues.

Well, ya learn something new every day. I woulda never thunk to reuse decapped live primers, but now I know ya can if ya need to.

As long as ya don't store 'em in a glass jar...
