    Lead sources in California?

Recently I have been researching casting of lead bullets and was quite interested in making my own until this morning when I went to my local tire shop and found out wonderful California has outlawed lead wheel weights. What other sources do we have here?

    Thanks

Have the same issue here I am at a stand still debating if any local scrap metal plants will have some lead for decent prices.

You can get lead for about $1 per pound delivered from www.castboolits.gunloads.com

Until I find better sources, buying good lead ingots saves processing time, equipment and scrounging effort. Even plain old WW ingots for $1/lb saves a lot of wasted time looking for and processing scrap and is a pretty good bargain. If I find a 1000 pound sailboat keel or an x-Ray facility being renovated, I don't mind buying good processed lead.

I think wheel weights are a nearly dead issue in CA.

Yeah I still get them from the tire shops. there is alot of zinc and steel wheel weights mixed in you have to sort thru but there still a pretty good supply of lead mixed in I have got 50 or 60 lbs so far. Not bad for only about 3 trips. Keep trying you`ll get some

Look into Craigslist in your area. At times diving weights can be had anywhere from $1 to $2 per pound. I have purchased several 5 and 10 pound diving weights already.

I do agree with the lead ww. Around my area majority of the tire shops are dried up in terms of availability -- thanks CA legislature looking out for our own safety

Check recycling centers. Two years ago I bought 85 lbs of lead in Ridgecrest (eastern Kern Cty) at cost.. $0.20 / lb.

''Old' is the operative word. Batteries sold in the last few years are very 'Lead efficient'. I.e. by the time the battery is dead, there is not much lead worth salvaging (you still need to figure out a way to dispose off the highly corrosive acid safely)

I would stay clear of old lead batteries. To much toxic crap given off when smeltted!

have you tried collecting range waste?
My local range collects and sell the lead.
I assume some of it is to casters.

There are a bunch of metal companies that recycle and sell metal, or that sell specialty items but also carry things like lead. There's bound to be one in your area. Just as an example here's one near me: http://www.rotometals.com/ - they even have a section for bullet casting alloys and free shipping for over $99. Looks like pure lead is $2/pound and qualifies for free shipping. I have no idea if that's a good price or not but you get the idea.
