New Batch 168 Sierra HPBT .308 Help

So I just finished a new batch of 168 Sierra HPBT with a Remington Primer and IMR 4895 powder. I used the Lyman book for some data on the suggested starting load. Is 38.0Grn going to be a good one to start with.

What I did is worked up (5) of each starting with 38.0 and ending up with 41.5Grn Just want to confirm that this will be sufficient?

    Thanks for the help

Those loads should be good to go in a bolt action but might be insufficient to operate a gas gun.

I've been using 42.5 grains of IMR4895 under 168 grain SMK's with WLR primers in my M1A and it likes that load.

My Savage bolt gun likes 'em a little hotter though at 43.2 grains.

IMR data shows a starting load of 41 grains and a max load of 45.4 grains for 168 grain Sierra HPBT bullets.

What rifle are you going to shoot them in?
IIRC I load the same for my Savage 10, but w/ 42 gr of powder.
If you're following a manual, you are going down the right direction.
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

Its a SPS Tactical 20" w/1-10 twist. I saw the The IMR web page and also was reading the Lyman for that same 4895 So I worked up 38.0, 38.5, 39.0 40.0 41.5 and go from there. I just didnt want to have a big mess on my hands. Thanks for your help guys. Overhall length of the reloads were 2.81.4

the 38.0gr would be lite in a gas gun but I run 39.0gr with the 168 SMK in my Match prepped M1A out to 300yds with no problems. Some of the HighPower guys run 38-39gr 4895 out of their boltguns.

True, But the Lyman 49th Ed says to start at 38.0, Will see how it fairs out with the SPS Tact... Also that load your decribing is H4895 which im sure is the same as IMR 4895 they just have different max loads.

But Lyman did NOT make the powder Hodgon did. I get my reloading data from the source not from someone who sells books.

The minimum is there for a reason. H states the min is 41 so you dont have flash over and kaboom.

There is a reason I dont have one single lyman reloading tool of any kind.

I have found the books are NOT in sync with the powder manufacturers. I stick with the guys who made and tested the powder.

I think my pet load was in the low 42.x range as well.

Good gun, I have one. The throats are very long on them, for accuracy you will want to find out exactly what yours is. My is near 2.9XX something. Try Varget or TAC with your next rounds, you will be happier..
