I just got an ak74 and shot some military surplus ammo through it. I am not sure how much I need to clean it. I put about a half gallon of hot water down the barrel and the same ammount though the gas tube. Then I cleaned the barrel with hopes #9 till it was clean. Is this enough cleaning to get rid of the corrosive salts? How do you guys clean after shooting corrosive ammo? Thanks.

That's way more than most guys do. You're a good AK owner. All I do is squirt some windex down the barrel when I get home. The rifles usually sit for at least a few hours if not more until I have time to clean them. Then I just clean like I would any other firearm with H#9. If I had the time to clean the guns as soon as I got them home I'd skip the windex step.
Corrosive ammo is not as bad as people make it seem. Remember this is all that was shot back in the day. And they didn't have the fancy cleaners we do today, just a shoe lace and some motor oil.

Lots of folks forget the gas system.

I take my SKS all the way down & scrub the pazizzle out of it with Gunslick & Hoppes. I don't stop till patches & pipe cleaners come out of every nook & cranny as white as when they went in. I have a set or round nylon brushes from Harbor Freight that I use in all the tube passages & whatnot.
The bolt then gets douched out really well with Gunnscrubber & oiled with Remoil. Don't know about AK but the SKS firing pin has no spring so the tunnel needs to be really clean or you can get slamfires.
Then everything gets a good dousing in CLP and CorrosionX."He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.
You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."

Thanks for reminding me. I took the WASR2 out last week, shot a bunch of spam can ammo, and haven't cleaned it yet.
Maybe I'll get around to it tomorrow. I think the longest I've left it without cleaning after shooting was 2 weeks or so. All I've ever used is the corrosive surplus and I haven't had a corrosion problem yet.
But, I don't live on the coast either.People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.

Use a CLP or light oil on a cloth and rub the rust away. I use Ballistol personally.
If the rust is deeper than light surface, you might need to use a fine grade scotch brite pad or steel wool. Put oil on it first.
Most likely it's just light surface rust and the cloth+oil method will work.Comment
