    270 ammo/ 223 ammo

Anyone have suggestions on quality LEAD FREE 270 ammo?
I will be using the round for deer.
The rifle is a Ruger Hawkeye w/ a 22" barrel.
    Leupold 3-9 X 40 scope.

The 223 will be for varmint hunting. Also LEAD FREE. Prefer 55gr.
    Rifle is a Howa 1500 20" barrel.
I'm using a Leupold Mark AR 3-9X40 scope.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I used 55-grain frangibles from DRT Ammo on whitetail in TX earlier this month. They worked fine out of my 20-inch 1:8 bull barreled AR. Don't know how accurate they are for varmints; never tried the ammo on paper, but point of aim and point of impact were the same for my two kills at sub-100 yards.

barnes great stuff, but they aren't accurate in every gun

I like barnes. I load ttsx in 7mm and it is a GREAT bullet (if your rifle likes long [people say heavy] bullets). I'd load that in 270, 130 grain.

For 223, I've loaded MPG but no terminal performance on game, couldn't tell you how they do.

The ttsx will get you where you want to be for sure.

        -----------

Since barnes are so long, they usually have to be driven to max to stabilize. I've never tried high density rounds like their tungsten core stuff, but I wonder if they'd be more tolerant. That being said, if I'm shooting barnes, I want it to be maxed out anyways, so it works for me.

for a hog hunt in my 270 i used the barns loads they shot fine, similar to my leaded hand loads small group and minor point of impact adjustment. I tried Hornady's superformance non leaded and for what ever reason they grouped 6 inches low and 8 inches right at 100 yds in a 3 " group so I decided in my rifle not to use them, your rifle may be different.

I use barnes x nosler e-tips both work fine in .223 for small to medium game. Remeber you cannot hunt with frangible non lead ammo in ca.

why? Is frangible legally (legally) not considered expanding?
