Decided to take the plunge into reloading... bit by bit. Decapping question

Question: Can I use the decapping rod and chamber from a 308 lee handloader kit for 9mm brass?


Background: I have 80 brass cases of 308 saved up, so today I ordered a lee handloader. I am going to just decap all the cases and then tumble them when I get a tumbler, load them when I get other tools, etc.

Anyways, I have been saving 9mm brass I found on the ground at certain shooting spots, and I now have a few hundred cases that I want to load (stock up for my handgun when I turn 21). I want to work on them as I go with the 308, but do not necessarily want to get 9mm reloading equip yet

You might be able to, I just bought the universal decapper (Lee's $14?) instead. I have decapped and cleaned several calibers I don't even have guns or friends for yet.

I would think the rod would fit into the case, my main concern is will it damage the rod/case because it is a "308 rod only"

It is best to tumble brass before depriming so you do not get media in the primer pocket/flashhole.

I am looking at SS media, which is said to be ok to use with deprimed brass right?

Even if I have to tumble first, would the rod work in 9mm?

If the decapping pin fits through the flash hole It will work. I think there are two sizes of decapping pins LG and S. Remove the decapping rod from the die and see if it fits smoothly in through the flash hole.

It will probably work provided the 9mm case will fit in the die. It wont resize it though so you will still have to buy a 9mm die set at some point

I wanted to deprime first, because I am in the process of making my own tumbler. It will use SS media, and from literature on SS, it says it will work with deprimed cases. I know a lot of people say cleaning primer pocket is useless... and it very well might be. But if I can clean it while cleaning the rest of the case....

I do know I will have to buy tools and equipment to load 9mm. but If I can get away with depriming and tumbling before I buy those, I figure, why not?

Yes, that depriming pin will work fine with 9mm.

Holy crap! That is one difficult way to reload.... first thing on your list should be a scale, i wouldnt trust those powder scoops at all

A press of some sort would be my next suggestion. I have a turret press that i hate if you want to pick one up dirt cheap
