    Deprime befor tumble test

Decided to try two different medias and see how they would clean the primer pocket. I did ten pistol and ten rifle for each test. Each set was run for 4 hours.

Started with crushed walnut from petco, a huge bag of it was 13 bucks. Added a cap full of Nufinish and a cut up dryer sheet

Next is the green Lyman media. Notice that almost every round has media stuck in the flash hole...

Who cares about the pocket? Well I guess there are people out there that clean the ar-15 bolt tail as well.

Was in reference to a question in this thread asking if tumbling would even remove the crud from the primer pocket.

Mostly noobs, the unaware, and those who load 100 pistol rounds or less on a single stage. Cleaning primer pockets for pistol loads in such a waste of time.
Reload long enough, and you will find that lots of stuff is so unnesessary. Your time is better used pulling the handle.

Thanks for posting this up, now maybe people will stop decapping before tumbling. Oh wait, no they wont.

Only reason why I deprime before tumbling is to remove Case lube and clean up the cases before I start reloading.

              RE

+1, deprime/resize, then tumble, then (on rifle rounds) I hit the pockets with the uniformer.

Stainless media cleans the pocket perfectly without sticking media in the hole...

And requires water, soap and drying in the oven after. One giant pita for a small gain and small amount of brass at a time. Try cleaning 10,000 308's in stainless.

I agree with the results but I have found when I don't tumble after decap/resize I will have 2/100 primers seat improperly or bend.

When I tumble after decap/resize the number is maybe 1/1000. Now, 20 primers per 1000 rounds isn't bad but I guess I take the approach that an improperly seated/bent up primer has a better chance of detonating on me. So, if I have to spend a little extra time decapping/priming I'm ok with it.

Plus, I run my 40's through a bulge buster on a single stage anyway so I may as well decap/size them first. I just run a universal decapper on my progressive to take care of the media stuck in the flash hole.

I've never tumbled after priming nor cleaned a primer pocket on a pistol case. I have some cases that I've loaded in excess of 20 times. I've never had any problems seating primers.

                      What are you priming on?

De-priming pistol brass and tumbling is unnecessary. However Stainless media really shines over vibratory tumbling when it comes to precision rifle brass. Deprimed rounds only take 1.5 hours to look brand new without any carbon inside and have no spec of primer dust. I pop them in the oven at 200 degrees for 10 minutes where their dry and cool off quickly.

1.5 hours compared to 3-6 hours or even longer in a vibratory tumbler without the carbon reduction. Plus the time to clean primer pockets.

I don't feel its too much of a hassle. You figure some people in here cut up dryer sheets, throw nufinish in their media and let it run first. All i do is get my drum and take it to the sink, throw about a handful and a half of brass, drip a few drops of dawn, spill just a little of lemishine, fill with water 4/5ths of the way and tumble. Once you have a pretty good process going you can de-prime and size, tumble, case prep and load rounds without stopping.

If you just doing blasting ammo then there's no point for stainless unless you like your brass shiny.

For me it is about removing the crude in the used primer and not having it become part of the media in the tumbler. I can see this crude in the tube that the spent primers collect in. I think my media will last longer by not adding that crude to it. Flash holes get cleaned by the pin in the sizing die.

I tumble first simply to keep the crud in the case out of my sizing/capping die.
