I remember some .357 Magnum rounds (I think they were Winchester-Westerns) that MIGHT have said they were metal penetrating rounds. They had a cone shape at the tip. They were my first maggie rounds I ever bought. I shot them up (in New Jersey of all places!), kept the brass and never asked looked back. This would have been back in 1973 or 74. Haven't seen them since, not that I have looked hard.

[QUOTE=Southpaw45;7559257]I have personally have never seen AP handgun ammo. I do know that Mil Spec rifle AP ammo is FMJ and the bullet tips are painted black to designate that there AP.[

Just a note.............Black tipped ammo is not necessarily armor piercing. Several manufacturers (i.e. winchester) made black tipped rifle rounds that are far from armor piercing.

Now your talking about just a painted tip on the bullet being black right? Not the whole bullet like some Winchester Supreme ammo is.

Mill ammo had different painted tips to designate what the ammo was intended for.

            Example
No paint on tip. Ball ammo
            Incendiary- Blue tip
Tracer- red, orange and white tip
            Armor Piercing- Black tip

Do you have a link describing what Winchester black tipped ammo your talking about?
