loading 223 with IMR 4227

Hi I have a AR15 in 223 and ended up with a pound of IMR4227. I want to use it up in the AR and am coming up with a load of 17gr. with a 55grFMJ at 2800fps with a cup of 51200. is this load ok to use?

I checked both of my manuals (Speer #13 and Lyman's 40's something edition) and no IMR 4227 powder listed. I even checked the on-line IMR load data and no 4227 for the 223 round listed. Where did you get that data from?

Hopefully you did not confuse the load data you stated that actually reflects a .30 Carbine load powder weightwise.

Well, the one book I have that mentions it, only describes it and states that it works well for .223. It doesn't say whether or not it works well in gas guns, though.
THere is no data at all for it in my load books, not even for bolt action rifles.

The actual IMR description of 4227 is this:
"IMR 4227™ This is the Magnum Pistol Powder in the IMR lineup. If it says Magnum, IMR 4227 is the choice for true magnum velocities and performance. In rifles this powder
delivers excellent velocity and accuracy in such cartridges as the 22 Hornet and 221
Fireball."

I think that should probably tell you right there. I would shelve it unless or until I could find something that supports its use in rifles.

I have used IMR 4198 with very good results in my AR's, and that is described as being only slightly slower burning than 4227.

4227 could be used , found some info on http://stevespages.com/page8.htm
17 grs would be max , 16 to 17 is what I believe was used of IMR 4227

I referenced a program I got and it at 17 as well. 4117 is better as an M-1 Carbine powder, but if that is all you have on hand.
