    Am I reading this right

I was planning to begin reloading for my .308 and I checked hand loads.com for a recipe for a 150 gr. fmj boat tail. When I scrolled over to check what primer to use it read CCI SP. Is this correct does a .308 cartridge call for a SP (small pistol) primer?

Needs Large rifle, Handloads.com has user provided data so sometimes there can be typos. If you notice anything obviously wrong i would throw it out

Get a manual and start with that, so you have a baseline of safe loads. Only start playing with user data once you have a foundation to refer it against.

Check your load in more than one reloading manual.

I recently did some loading and only checked the powder manufacturers online manual and the resulting load was way too hot (blew primers out of the brass). If I had cross checked against other reloading manuals it would have been obvious that the powder weight was incorrect.

Your loading manual should have a very good selection of loads for. 308. Why the hell are you getting your data off the web? If you're using some oddball projectiles then consult the manufacturer.

It will give some good insight, but will not provide load data. Hornady, Sierra, Lyman, Speer, Lee...those actually contain the "recipes" for your loads.

If your .308 is a semi-auto, like an AR-10, you should use CCI #34 Large Rifle Magnum Primers since they have harder cups to prevent a slam fire which can occur on a military style rifle with a free floating firing pin.

Look at the casehead on your brass. Does it look like a SRP or LRP? (SRP=1/8". LRP=3/16") .308 is a LRP. Work up a load. Do not use someone else's data from a website. READ MORE BOOKS!
