Flying with Checked In Luggage of Ammos question??

    Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone or is this LEGAL to do. I'm going to be going out of state for a few days and was planning to check out some local gun stores and if i find some good deal on ammos and maybe firearms components i might want to bring them back.
So my question and concern is if it is LEGAL to check in my luggages full of ammos without getting in trouble. I mean i could have it shipped to my address but shipping might not justify the the purchase.
Has anyone here ever flew with a luggage of ammos that is Checked In before?
Any comment and feedback is appreciated!

    thanks

Yes, you can have ammo in your luggage. I believe there is a set limit. Call the airlines or go on line and ask the obvous questions. i traveled two years ago, with 300 rounds, declared it at check-in, got the full security treatment and was good to go.

11lbs is the max / person on all airlines... So roughly 350-400 rounds 9mm or .223

I do it every week. Check TSA's site for the proper guidelines, but the ammo must be in the original boxes OR similarly appropriate storage containers (I use MTM plastic cases).

Alaska Airlines allows 50 pounds of ammunition if your entire trip is on their planes and within the U.S. If you have to travel on a "partner" airline for part of the trip or your flight is international then they have the 11 pound limit of most other airlines.

Thanks guys for all the info..at the moment i don't know what airline i'll be flying but i do plan to contact them to find out. I didn't want to call them and just ask them "hey can i bring ammos onto your airplane", that might of make them feel uncomfortable so i decided to ask peoples on there first to see if there were any experience on this matter.
I do plan to upfront let them know that i'm checking ammunition in my luggage/box.
So if you guys are saying that there is a limitation of how many pounds you can transport ammunition in a luggage then what about the 50lbs limit per luggage? shouldn't I be able to carry a max of 50lbs per luggage/box since that is what their rules are? Or is that a certain law that only apply to ammunition transporting only?

              thanks all...

The International Civil Aviation Organization has set a standard of 11 pounds of ammo per passenger on international flights. U.S. law says the maximum limit for domestic flights is 66 pounds. But U.S. law also says that airlines are free to follow the ICAO limits if they want to. Most airlines have chosen to follow the ICAO 11 pound limit.
