    45-70 sabot loads?

I cant get this(apparently bad) idea out of my head.
    45-70 sabots should = 150 to 200grain projectiles around 2500-3000fps

I would like to reload some 45-70 brass with lighter bullets and get higher velocity out of my TC pistol. I just wonder how much research has been done with this idea. So far i have exhausted all of my places to search(google, cast boolits, pistolsmith etc). Maybe I'm being naive in thinking this should not be difficult to figure out.

I have the gun, brass and reloading setup, now i need some info on what powder, how much powder and sabot-bullet combinations.

I want to be as safe as possible with this so please no "guessing", thanks for any responses.

hey if remington can through a 55gr sabot round out of a 30.06, you should be able to figure something out.... looking forward to where you might go with this...

Can you get sabots with a .457 outside dimension?

A long time ago, in this galaxy, I figured I'd get rich by offering a selection of sabots where you could conceivably shoot everything from 22s to 357s out of a .44 Mag. Drew up a design myself. Never followed through. But I like your thinking. And it seems to me that as little friction as an undersized bullet in a plastic case would cause, loading could be anything from mild to nearly as much as you could put in there. But that's my thinking, NOT based on any experience. So it's not to be trusted. You may well be on your own with this, friend. I know of no such experiments. The makers of the sabot offer no suggestions or hints?

If the sabots aren't quite the right size, I'm envisioning a paper patched sabot, at least to get it worked out. Now that's blending technologies eh?

not so far, i have a 45/70 pistol that i would be working the loads up for but with my ADD i have switched gears and im on to other projects,

i will keep looking for components and information and see if anything develops

They sell 45 caliber sabots for blackpowder shooters to shoot 200 grain, 40 caliber bullets. I don't know how well they'd work at smokeless velocities though.

The idea is good in theory but usually does not work(except for the Rem loads) as the firearm usually has too slow a twist to stablize the bullet. There are sabots offered for the 50BMG but everyone who has tried it has had very poor results. The BP sabots do not work well either. Need not ask why I know.

There are folks experimenting with plastic bullets. They are very light, come out the barrel at warp speed, and because they are low density they are nice and long, so less concerns about stability comparatively.

Should be able to find some good research out there.

These are fun @ 3,000 fps ....machined aluminum

" The intent of the 458-300 was to create a fast fracturing bullet for personal defense and CQB applications to maximize terminal effect while minimizing potential secondary penetration. Well, it almost works! The terminal performance is simply unbelievable. At 3,000fps the bullet is a water-jug-vaporizing son of a gun. "

" There is virtually no recoil and the above load is just a riot to shoot. The bullet is made from aluminum and to eliminate the potential for aluminum oxide formation, the bullets are coated with a dry film lube immediately after they are cleaned. "

                            ^^ at $1 ^^ per bullet that's expensive fun.
