In my experience a taper crimp adds to the friction for both my 40S&W and 45Auto, whereas simply removing the bell doesn't provide enough friction with plated Xtreme bullets that I can't push the bullet deeper into the case. They're straight-walled cartridges so it isn't a matter of adjusting to increase the sizing action, instead the expanders just kick the diameter out to the point where there's insufficient neck tension. I can shave the expander diameters down a bit, but in case I decide to try lead bullets again it's easier to just use the FCD in stage 5 of the LNL AP.
