Newbie needs help with a receipe

I'm just getting started with reloading and I have been reading books, and everything I can find on the internet, I've also been buying my equipment and supplies as I go along. Now I'm wondering if I've got the right match of supplies that will work together. Here is where I am at
I will be reloading .40. I will just be using them for targets at the range.
I have already purchased Berry's Precision Plated .40 180gr DS bullets. I also have Winchester 231 powder. The problem I'm running into now is I cannot find the combination of these bullets and powder together on any of the charts. For example on the Hodgdon website the only 180gr bullet listed is 180 GR. HDY XTP. So where does that leave me. So would I use that recipe which would be 4.1 to start?
    Hope this makes some sense,
    Thanks

This is the exact issue i told you to avoid in your previous thread ! When i get home (if somebody hasnt already helped you ) i will search for some usable data for those components.

If I need to I'll switch to a different powder. I did make sure to buy everything in small batches just in case something like this came up. Once I get everything down I'll buy in bulk.

Your going to have to use lead data, ill drum something up for you real quick. BRB

Cant find too much data out there, but looks like people have had good results from about 4.8 grn of W231 under a plated 180 grn.

DO NOT USE THIS AS LOAD DATA, this is an approximation

its your job to safely experiment. I would treat 4.8 grn as a max load and start somewhere about 4.3 grn and work your way up.

Hopefully someone who knows what they are talking about chimes in because i have never used this load, i dont even load .40

Ill tell you what, if your nearby ill buy that W231 off you and you can go buy AA no. 5 or bullseye. You should have bought the powder with the recipe in mind, not the other way around. I mentioned AA no. 5 or Bullseye because there is solid data for it. Your definatley not the first person to use w231 in a .40 but these people all knew what they were experimenting with and had more experience

Here's a thread on .40 with W231 on another site.

Looking for a load with w231 and 180 grain lead bullet. I don't seem to find that load in any of the books I have. I'm starting out with 4.5 grains but I heaven't tried them out. These are plinking loads so not looking for anything very hot. Bob

That's the first thing that came up on yahoo when i typed in w231 with 180 grain lead bullets.

I'm sure there's plenty of info out there. This will get you started.

I'd start with 4.1 and work my way up. But that is me.

My speer manual lists 180 gr hp and fn bullet data in the same column but doesn't list w231.

Also remember that W231 and HP-38 are the same powders. May be easier to find some data.

I use 4.8gr of W231 for 165gr plated. It is near the middle of the LEE load chart for 170gr Lead ( 4.0 - 5.2 W231 AOL 1.100). It is a nice mild load that shoots very accurately.

For plated, just use start load up to halfway to max. Plated requires a bit less powder than jacketed, but more than lead. Watch for pressure signs, and go slow.

I use win231 with 180g RNFP Copper Plated (Xteremebullets from tuners) I load 5.0grains for my .40. this is a mild load that is working well for me with target/range shots.

Start at 4.0 gr and work your way up. I will not go over 4.5 gr on plated bullets.

Op, hope my first post didn't sound rude, it was not meant to.
My Lyman manual list 4.3-5.8gr of 231 with an OAL of 1.125 for 175gr lead. Based on this + all the information from the other posts, I would be confident starting with 4.3gr and working my load up from there.

Same recipe I've been using since I started loading .40. I use HP-38, which is the same powder as 231. 4.1 gr under a 180 plated tc. Softest recoiling load I have come across for the .40, accurate and quite clean to boot. My G22 and 23 eat this load for breakfast, lunch and dinner, never had any issues whatsoever.

OK well I've never used W231 but I'm interested in your wanting to buy in bulk? 4 to 6 grains of powder is a "boat load" of loads from a 7000 grain pound. OK buy a 4 pound can, and on the average of 5 grains thats 5600 rounds. Personally I have 3 1970's vintage handguns that I bought new back then (Browning Hi-Power 9mm, S&W model 29 & Colt Python). 3 different cartridges that haven't seen that many rounds fired combined. Yes I have 4 lbs. of W296 for the .44 and .357, but I use 15 plus grains in one and 22 plus in the other.
