    Shotgun Hulls, reloadable or throwaways?

    Hello all you reloadin' freaks!

I've a few (hundred?) hulls sitting here in a clay pigeon box, from when we went out to the forest and had some fun. We were responsible and cleaned up like good lil boys, and now I have to decide what to do with the hulls.

There are some federal hulls, remington hulls, winchester hulls, most of them have a steel powder case, but all of the remingtons have a brass case. I even have one 00 buck case in there, don't know how that got in there, since we weren't shooting them....

What do I do with them? If they are reloadable, and somebody wants them, I'll throw them in a flatrate box and you just pay the shipping.

    Thanks!

    *edit*

Oh yeah, forgot about the .22 cases too, anybody want those? I'm guessing I'm just going to end up throwing those away. The .40/.45 I need to keep to reload

Well there's always this, a friend who makes sea shell mailboxes told me he had made me a "shell" mailbox

Dang it, we have a 'community' mailbox. That'd be a bit of a property vandalism if I were to do that...

Typically, only the Winchester AA, Remington STS or Remington Nitro hulls get reloaded.

        Everything else usually gets pitched.

just about any remington is nice to reload...gun clubs, nitro, STS, game loads, and even the bulk remingtons from wal mart. Those are all one piece hulls and mostly only differ in base material and 6 point vs 8 point crimps. most that reload usually stick to one brand or type of hull as you cannot swap components at will in a load recipe and some wads will not properly fit certain hulls.

as far as what to do with the ones you picked up...you might be better off just throwing them in the recycle bin. I reload and at least for me, its not worth it to get a mixed bag of shells.

The really easy way to tell if a shotshell is reloadable... if the plastic has a ribbed outside, then it's garbage, fodder for covering the mailbox. If it is a smooth plastic hull, then it is typically reusable.

The ribbed ones will typically split when you try to reload them. For smooth plastic hulls, there are generally two ways they are made, the 2-piece compression formed hulls, and the molded tube type which is easily distinguished because the bottom of the shotshell will have a plastic piece of a different color in the bottom.

Shotgun shells are made in a number of different ways, higher quality shells are molded from a single piece of plastic, or in the case of AA hulls, are made from two pieces that are ultrasonically welded together. Low cost shells (like the kind you buy at walmart) use a piece of extruded plastic tube, which is cut into lengths, swaged into the brass extraction head, and then a plastic plug is inserted that holds it in place.

BS. I reload just about any .410 hull I can get my hands on. When it comes to 12g, I've reloaded many different high based shells, old AAs (I've never used the new ones, STSs and the cheap Walmart stuff too. My dad has a pet load for his handicap loads that uses old Active hulls. Also, when one wants to roll crimp their rounds, they need to start with either virgin hulls or previously roll crimped ones. Obviously, those hulls you listed aren't roll crimped.
