    .308 equivalent of SS-109?

    All,

I've been bitten by the .308 bug and am looking to build a .308 AR to replace my Mauser that's been "sporterized" to 30.06. It just isn't accurate enough for me without some major work. So since I'm jonesing for a new gun I figured I'd dive into the world of .308 AR's.

.308 is a new cartridge for me (grew up w/ 30-30's and 30-06's for hunting) and I'll work on getting what I need to reload .308 on my 650 soon but I'm wondering if there's a .308 equivalent to SS-109? I'm thinking it would make a good SHTF ammo in case I needed a little more penetration thatn standard FMJ's.

Anyone know of such a beast (either bullets or cartridges)?

.308 is available in AP. Dunno where to find it...

I can't imagine where you'd need more than regular .308 ball for "added penetration." The stuff already packs quite a whallop.

There are several 7.62x51 AP rounds. M993 and M61 AP come to mind. I think they're regulated for sale, though, federally (look up 922(a)).

        There's a saboted round, too.

The M993 is tungsten core. I think it might be out of the realm of what you're looking for.

Good luck trying to find the loaded stuff. I've never seen the M993 bullets for sale though the M61 bullets were rather available up until maybe a few months ago.
