Nope, but I expected them to. That's why I held onto the case. Officer I did not unlawfully discharge a firearm - see, the ammo went off outside of the gun

Thanks for sharing this. You made me realize how much bagged and loose ammo I have in places that could allow this to happen to me too. Gotta get that squared away.
And come to think of it, when I've introduced newbies to shooting, I probably have not properly stressed the need to be mindful of how ammunition is handled and how dangerous it can be.

My intent in sharing this is simply to make people aware of what can happen. I think there are two lessons here:

1) Handle ammo carefully, however it is packaged - but especially if it is in bags. This happened because I did not do that.

2) A round going off outside the gun is anywhere near as dangerous as an AD or ND in a gun. The potential for injury is low, but real. Of course if there is anything flammable around........

i've always just stored my mass plinking rounds loose in military style ammo cans. is this not the proper way to store and transport them any longer?

i do have mtm/plano type cases for my precision rifle rounds, but never thought about doing this with my non-precision mass plinking rounds. i've always just reloaded and let them drop into the ammo box...

what's the best way to store and transport 1000 rounds? i think a 50cal ammo box can hold close to 1500 9mm (maybe more?)... my 223 is loose in an ammo box too (which has more risk of this type), maybe put them into stripper clips?

or is that just being too paranoid...

There is a guy on ebay thats sells factory ammo boxes for about a $1 a box shipped, most of the time he sells 30+ boxes at a time.

I buy the white boxes from Midway - ammo bags always scared me.

you would probably be fine storing ammo in a ammo can as long as you dont bang it around or drop it. Remember he tossed the bag of ammo from about 5 feet away.

Glad to hear no one was hurt. I was worried about this issue so now I use these to hold reloads. Much cheaper than plastic boxes and stack very neat in ammo cans. They are always on sale to...
