    Neck tension

Using a Lee neck sizer die and I noticed an issue last night. I ended up loading a combo of BHA and winchester brass (yeah, I know) because about 10 of my winny brass had to little neck tension on them. The bullet would slide right out the finished cartridge when I went to set it in the box. Am I doing something wrong or is it the die? I set it according to Lee's instructions.1/4 turn after it touches the top of the shell plate.

I've noticed very light neck tension using that die as well. You really have to give it some force to squeeze the neck down around the mandrel. If it continues, send it to lee and have them polish the mandrel down for you. Or buy a bushing neck die.

Sounds like the die. I had the same issue with a set of 30-06 FL dies from Lee.

I have the same issue with my Lee .308 neck sizing die. I just have to really crank on it to get the neck tension correct. It works fine, but it take a little work.

If I remember right, the instructions that come with the Lee sizing dies say to raise the ram fully, then screw the die downward until it bottoms on the shell holder, then screw the die down an additional 1/4 to 1/3 turns before tightening the lock ring.

Did all of you give it an additional 1/4 turn only?

What happens when you go 1/3 turn instead?

Would the amount of additional turning have an effect on neck tension?

I set it just like they said to.

I turned the die to what we can call 1/3 and that helped. You gotta crank down on it though.

Lee dies might not be the optimum for what you need. You do need 3-4 thousandths of an inch interference between the bullet and case neck diameters. I'd pause for a day or two until you can measure what you get from Richard Lee's die.

RCBS and Redding will custom-size the expander button to fit bullet diameter at no charge if the stock button needs adjustment; not sure if Lee will or not.

                    Lee Precision is an oxymoron.
                    Get Redding or Forester dies.
