    Cannelure Tool

Does anyone have a cannelure cutting tool?

    Which one do you have?

Are you willing to rent it out for a day or two?

Any reason you need one? I would bet 50% of reloaders dont even crimp.

I'd prefer coin edge since lathe cutting would probably compromise the jacket.

6.8SPC for an AR-15 to prevent bullet pushback. Yes, I crimp, but the cannelure adds another level of safety. Most of the 6.8mm/.277 bullets on the market that I've seen don't have cannelures.

The projectiles I'm looking at aren't available with a cannelure and it's a rare opportunity to score some inexpensive 6.8mm bullets.

Interested in letting it out of your sight for a week, once the bullets get here?

I suppose a nice tight crimp with the Lee FCD would do. Opinions?

I wonder if you could modify a FCD for a smaller caliber by scribing coin edge tool marks into the crimper. Then holding a bullet from the top and crimping the cannelure in there.

How much does a cannelure tool cost, anyways?

                Very interesting.

So, I know that some casters experimented with using the FCD to press a gas check groove in place at the bottom of a bullet. I also know that for other purposes in other industries, we can peen a surface UP in order to raise high tolerance pin platforms.

I could easily see a combination, where the leaves of the FCD are removed and hand peened to create a raised surface to imprint into a bullet. Or perhaps the other contact areas filed down to create the raised cannelure pattern.

At the price of Corbin's cannelure tool, I'd imagine it would be worth a shot to modify a FCD!

OR, as a counterpoint, have you ever seen directions on how to make a homemade glue scraper out of steel, notenuf? It works like this. With a small piece of sheet steel, we turn over the edge to create a burr on one side. Basically mushroom over an edge. That sharp edge is honed and becomes the glue scraper surface. Tons of directions online to do it.

I could easily see doing something like that with the fins of an FCD if it can be taken apart (I'm not intimately familiar with all the parts and take-apart-ability of the FCD). Where the fin tops would be curled over just a smidge. A real little bit to create not a sharp edge, but a metal curl. That *should* press a groove around your bullets. No coin edge, but since it would be pressed it it would not compromise the jacket integrity.

                  Just another brain storm.
