    .357 components and recipe

So I've picked up my first revolver a ruger security six in .357 magnum and I'm now looking for reloading components and some recipes or powder suggestions.

As far as bullets go can you reccomend lead or plated? I'm just worried about leading so the best deal I found was 90 or so for 1000 plates bullets from berrys? That a good deal or is there something Better to get?

As far as powder goes ive got a couple pounds of unique which I know I can use just wonderin if anyone has any feedback on it or could make another suggestion?

Where did you find 1k Berrys for $90? are they 158 grainers? i always found Xtreme to be cheaper than Berrys, but yes plated bullets are great, Cheap and much better than Lead. As far as recipes go i use the 158 grn RNFP plated bullets over about 5.7 grn of Winchester 231. Acurate out to 100 yards and beyond, its not a hot load, you can definatley load hotter if you want

I should also caution you that i dont use a loading manual, and a couple of online sources have this listed as well over max load.

That's for 125 gr for 89 and some odd cents. The 158 grains are a 105 or so.

        What powders do you have?

For lead or plated, you'll want to keep the velocity down, under 1000 fps or so or you'll be spending a lot of time de-leading your barrel. Get some jackets SP or HP for the magnum velocity loads.

Yeah thats a little conservative, plated bullets should be good for at least 1200 fps or so, they even make plated bullets for .30-30 which is around 2100 fps.

.357 works really well in the 1200 fps range, the plated bullets work fine for this velocity.

Ditto on the 1200 for plated. I shoot plated Xtremes at 2100 in 30 cal with very good results.

You can also start out by loading 38 special loads to 800 fps. If you look up the loads for 38 special, you can use them in 357 cases, but with the slightly larger volume, you'll end up with slightly lower velocities. My 38 special load for 158g and Unique is 4.6 grains with a 1.55" OAL.

One thing to note is that Unique will load down to very light loads, but begins to get "dirty" with soot on the case and unburned flakes flying around at low pressures. When loaded up to higher pressures, it cleans up nicely. It's a very versatile powder that is bulky enough to easily see accidental double charges. Some people can't seem to meter it consistently, but I have not had a problem with it.

Years ago... when I was shooting Bianchi Cup my favorite 357 Magnum load was Zero 125gr JHP atop 5.1grs of W231 ignited by a Federal (100) small pistol primer. If I remember correctly the load makes major at around 1050fps out of a 6" Krieger .355" bore barrel on my SW686.

They sell Xtreme plated bullets at a few places around here for $73 per 1k for 125 grn, and $86 per 1k for 158 grn. Berry's is fine but youll save money buying Xtreme. Someone was trying to get a group buy for them going a while ago but it didnt pan out, bummer, id love have a few thousand of those bullets lying around when prices go up

158 grain xtreme bullets for $97 shipped.... I think we might have a winner here. Though they do have berrys double struck for $4 more? Which is the better bullet?

All Berry's bullets are "double Struck" they just go through a sizing process after being plated. They claim it makes them 100% symetric. Honestly i wouldnt know the difference but for $4 more why not? Also you can probably get them cheaper than that if you buy from a local store. I forget where, you should shop around a bit. Phillips wholesale might have the best deals on them. I know for sure you can get them at fowlers or the angeles reloading store
