Try imr-xbr-8028 (42.3gr) and 155, 168 or 175 smk with a cci br lr primers seated to 2.8. They shot real well for me.

Does anyone have load data for Barnes 150 grain Triple Shock X bullets for .308 Winchester and/or 300WSM.
I’d love to find a Varget load for both to minimize the number of powders on my bench. I have a lb. of 7828ssc for the 300WSM, but most of the load data leans towards 180s or bigger.
These 150 Barnes load will be for lead free California deer zones. This is my first foray with Barnes bullets. I have learned they are often more sensitive in pressure than other bullets, and to work up loads in smaller increments. I almost always side toward the starting loads anyway; so that shouldn’t be a problem.
Any help or advice on Barnes bullets greatly appreciated.
I know this s a .308 thread, but I like having two rifles ready for deer season just in case. The 300WSM is a bit much for blacktails, but 150s might be good load for longe range and antelope.
Thanks in advance.Comment

18" GAP AR-10 load info
Hi All,
I have a G.A. Precision AR10 18" barrel on the way and I'm looking for load info so I can start to collect the right components.
GAP suggested 44gr Varget with the Sierra 175 SMK at 2.80" COAL.
I also have some 168gr FGMM to try.
What would be some other good bullet choices? Most of my shooting is 300 yds and in, but occasionally out to 600-800 yds.
I'm looking at maybe the 168 SMK and some other lighter weights.
How would the 155 Lapua Scenar do in a 18" barrel?
What would be a decent plinking bullet?
thanks in advance.

A 155gr bullet is fine for 500 yards. For that matter, so is a 135gr or a 210gr. What really matters is the velocity that you can push them at.
You might try the JBM ballistics calculator with your specific bullet and velocity to understand a bit more about how well your cartridge/rifle will operate out to 500 yards.

My sps tactical 20" doesn't really care what you feed it in terms of powder as long as the burn rate is in the appropriate range. Brass prep and neck tension seem to be the keys to good loads. FGMM gets really hard to resize and the primer pockets get kinda loose after 3 or 4 loadings. PMC brass is super hard in my IMHO plus the flash holes are never on center. I like stuff thans annealed from the factory.
I get sub moa groups with all of the following 168gr loads:
168 SMK loaded .020 off the lands (in my remington thats 2.885, yes 2.885)
168 AMAX loaded to 2.915
168 Hornady Match loaded to 2.900
LC or Federal Nato Brass and sometimes Federal GMM OR R.C. (Primer Pockets uniformed, Full length sized, trimmed to 2.004 - 2.006) Federal 210M, CCI BR2, W/W or just about any primer
39.5 gr IMR 3031
42.5 gr Varget
42 gr of RL-15
41.5 gr Bartlett surplus 4895, IMR 4895 or H4895
42.3 gr N140
I've tried them all, the most consistant have been Varget and Rl-15 but its definately a push, I don't shoot paper further out than about 200yds so the difference in any of these powders is neglegable to me. All listed loads are suggested loads from Zedikers or the Sierra Book developed years ago by guys who shoot alot more than I do so I figure why go hotter, why beat up the chamber or the brass. Another upside is The loads are moderate so you don't have to worry too much about some cases having smaller capacity (Lake City and PMC are the thickest as far as I can tell)...
My rifle is sensitive to seating depth, I used to load everything to 2.825 so it could go in the M1a mags too but now I keep that brass separate.
My best groups ever were under 1/2 when I ran out of match kings and finished a flat with some 168 Amax s. I loaded up about 25 before I realized that I forgot to reset the seating die and the OAL ended up at 2.915. when I compared the two different rounds I noticed that the Ogive on the hornady is way further back. I tried to chamber one and the bolt closed with 0 effort so I single fed those and gave it a shot. 5 shots, ONE RAGGED HOLE @ 100yds.
We used the RCBS precision mic to measure my chamber, using a 168 match king, I have to load 2.905 to touch the lands, amaxes have to be 2.935 and hornady match go 2.920.
I hope I'm not rambling on too much, sorry....Comment

Berger 155.5 shot from a TRG-22 with 26" barrel
308 Lapula Palma brass
Varget 47 gr.
CCI 450 small rifle magnum primer
Berger 155.5 bullet
.075 off the lands
measures 2.170 from base of brass case to ogive
Chronograph showed average fps of 2872.4
Standard deviation is 10 fps
This load is for 600 to 800 yard range. It did not seem as accurate at I think it was 43gr of Varget which at 100 yard I could shoot .3 MOA and better. The hotter load is still excellent but If I was only going to shoot to 300 yards I go with lighter load.

Varget is a little slow for an M14...2520 is the slowest burning powder I'd use.I'm about to start reloading for a 16" .308 (M1A Socom). I made the mistake of already buying a few components before asking the questions (Shame on me). What receipe would you guys recomend for this gun? The little i bought was 1lb Varget, CCI LR primers, 168 HPBT Hornady Match bullets. If possible what's a good load using these for the M1A socom and what would the recommended components be for this gun? Also is there a significant difference between using cast bullets and jacketed at ranges up to 350 yards for the .308 of of such a short barrel? Oh and i'm not sure if it matters but according to a quick search it's got a 1/11" twist.
Use jacketed bullets, OTM is OK. Save the boolits for your vintage rifles.Last edited by M118; 08-06-2011, 11:58 PM.Comment

I've got a question for you guys. I'm new to loading so forgive me. How is it possible to share load information when loading for a bolt action , say 308 winchester? Isn't the OAL and COL different for each gun? And because of this , wouldnt that affect powder? Please enlighten me.Comment

I have 1700 rounds of 308 (1400 Belgium sealed in heavy rubber packs of 200 rnds. each and 300 of norinco in 20 rnds. boxes) and reloading gear all (not sold separately) for $1100. I can't find anything that resembles a classified add on the website so I'm posting this. Pictures and specifications via email. wreckreation@gmail.com

its a good starting point. as you can take two of the same rifles and they will probably like something else from each other.
as for col/oal affecting powder, No
I can load my .308 to standard col/oal or a longer col/oal and use the same powder and charge weight for both.Comment

Haven't tend to this thread for "quite" a while....
Let's talk about the new kid on the block:
Hornady 178 BTHP #30715
This is the bullet they use for their Superformance .308WIN 178BTHP ammo #8077, which is like 100fps faster than any other commercial ammo or even handload ammo.
Reloading book data (ultra conservative):
Seemingly there are quite a lot of "good results" with the #8077 ammo, which proves that this bullet should fly and group well.
Now, it is time to develop some loads for it...... anyone of you got some good recipe?
Good'O RL15, Varget, 4895? Or some new ones like 2000MR, AR-Comp?- LL
