    Shellholder won't stay on ram?

Got all my reloading stuff. Started putting things together, wanted to de-prime the cases to get them in the tumbler. Everything I'm reading says the shellholder should fit snugly on the ram... the manual says "retained in the recess in the top of the ram by a detent spring." I don't see any spring... and my #16 hornady shellholder for 223 just slides in and out without no resistance. I feel like I'm missing something obvious. There are also some (what I'd consider) really large gouges in the metal on the right side of the press. Makes me wonder if it was impacted somehow and that could be why there's no detent spring? God I hope not, though I don't really see how that could happen.

    Thanks in advance.

Looks like you are missing the clip (detent spring).

On one of my presses it sits in the slot on the outside, on the other it sits inside the slot. In both cases, the clips mouth faces out and the shellholder slides past it and is held in place by it.

Just call Hornaday they will send you one.

Looks like a Hornady press, so call Hornady and I'm sure they'll send you one. To get by an get your de-priming done , try a layer or two of masking tape around the shellholder lower part and see if that gives enough stick (wedge effect) for temporary use.

Everyone is correct your are missing the little circlip like spring clip on the ram that holds the shell holder in. Here is a picture if my lee press to give you an idea of what it should look like.

my old lyman spartan has a little set screw

you could probably make the clip from a thick paperclip using a needle nose pliers to make the tooth and then wrap it around a magic marker

yea i macgyver that ship all the time

That sucks. Nothing like setting up a new toy and finding out it has a missing part. Just cal Hornady in the morning and most likely they will have a new one out to you the same day.

I was pretty bummed I'm really excited to get going. There's still a lot of things in the manual etc that I don't get. But tomorrow is my day off and I plan to read a lot of the Hornady reloading book it came with, and might try to find another one online... the more the better i hear. Thanks for your encouragement guys.

Check the box and all the packing materials, it's probably in there somewhere.

                      that's what I was thinking.

Failing that, the MacGuyver omni-tool would do the job just as well.

Hornady will hook you up with the clip...but, did the shipping box that it arrived in have damage? That gouge on the side and what looks to be a gouge in the ram, where the shellholder slides in(?) is not the norm. It almost looks like a second or a press that someone returned previously, if no box damage. As long as the ram itself is not tweaked (moves up and down straight) it not a huge deal....but

                        good luck

Good point. Op, did you buy this press new, or as new? Cause I would probably have an issue with just the gouge if I was expecting new product.

If I am not mistaken, it looks like the clip broke off in there. Well the last pic in the post. That shouldn't be sticking out like that on the inside of the ram. I call that thing the half moon clip.
Is the clip maybe on backwards and that is how they ship it. I don't know, I have never bought a new press.

Why do you want to deprime before the tumbler?
