460 S&W bullets

I have a S&W 460 Performance Center on the way . I have been looking around for a source to buy some bullets, can't seem to find any. Any 460 re loaders out there. I would prefer hard cast lead since its inexpensive but jacketed would do.

460 S&W uses 45 caliber pistol bullets, I think.

So any of the .451 and .454 diameter bullets will work.

But not the .458 diameter ones. Those are 45 caliber rifle bullets.

Whats up Jimmy, well I have been doing a lot of reading and every one is saying a lot of the 45 bullets will not be able to handle the 460 velocities. I have been reloading the 500 S&W and I know what these things could do to softer bullets. I was just looking for a source with a good selection of bullets for the 460.

460 S&W bullets

I run the two bullets on the right as fast as possible through my Rugers. I just picked up a 1894 Marlin in 45 Colt that is also going to use them.

These are cast from straight wheel weights and have a BHN of around 9. I can water quench them and they run around 18 or so. They are as hard as woodpecker lips when water quenched.

They are cast from a custom mold that I have.

Yeah, you cant just use ANY .45 bullets. Make sure they are magnum rated. I used hornady FTX 240 grn hollowpoint magnums cuz they were cheaper than the actual 200 grn 460 bullets.

+1 if you go the 45LC route, don't know if it's worth it.. kinda like a 22lr in a 44mag... 454 route will get you 38SPL in a 357 performance and is slightly less expensive due to more bullet choices but if you want the full brunt of the 460 the 240 gr FTX MAG is the way to go

I stopped shooting 45's and 454's when I got enough brass to switch over to 460 exclusively.

you CAN shoot ANY 45 cal (.451-.454 bullet, whatever your throat is) bullet, Just can't (can, maybe not wise) exceed the recommended velocity, but owning a 500, you already knew all this.

I buy cheapy 45 acp cast bullets and love shooting them. With trailboss.

Anyways, you asked about the high velocity stuff, and it's a pain in the butt to find. Here's a short list, not necessarily complete:

Barnes XPB:
200 grain spitzer for 460. Shoots like a laser.
275 grain spitzer for 460.
250 grain HP for 454. shoots like a laser @ 460 velocity.
225 grain, for 45 LC (dunno if good to 460 velocity, but all copper)
325 buster, for 454 (dunno if good for 460 velocity, but 454)
200 grain HP for 45LC (dunno if good for 460 velocity, but all copper)

Hornady XTP mags, 240 and 300 grain.
Hornady FTX 200 grain, for 460
Hornady FTX 250 grain, for 450 bushmaster (this has to be good for 460's, right?)

Cast Performance, 300, 325, 335, 360, 395 grain gas checked bullets.

Several selections from Penn bullets.

Several selections from Beartooth bullets.

There are more. Selections from sierra, Nosler, and more.

I haven't tried them all, but here is what I've tried and my thoughts:

Hornady 200 grain FTX: awesome, and cheapest (I think?) jacketed choice @ 50 cents a pop. Like a laser beam in my gun (not the S&W) at near max speed.

Barnes 200 grain spitzer and 250 grain HP for 454 casull. Too expensive, but AWESOME bullets on paper so far. These are unbelievable for me given the lack of development (who can afford to develop a load for these?) but both shoot for me 3" at 50 yards with is amazing because to get anywhere near that with the other choices took lots of testing. I REALLY wanna see what both of these bullets do to game.

Hornady XTP mag, 240 and 300. I had only a handful of each of these. They shot well, seemed OK.

Penn 340 grain no-gas-check silver alloy rated for 2100 fps 454 casull bullets. I'm having problems getting these to group. They also keyhole on me. That being said, I was able to hit steels at 100y with them several times. Must be lucky shots?

I'm now sitting on my first 40 home-cast 300 grain (320 grain with checks) gas checked bullets. That doesn't help you, I'm just bragging a little. Before I shoot them and have the same trouble as the 340 grain penns

BTW if you want the full brunt of the 460, try those 340 grain penns at near max loads. The recoil is ridiculous, and the load data goes up to 400 grain bullets. The website I linked suggested folks are playing with 500 grainers (isn't a 1oz slug 440 grains?).

Too crazy for me. After feeling the 340 at max, and if the 250 barnes XPB HP can take the largest of pigs at max, I'm happy enough.

I'm sure all this is nothing compared to your 500.

Well I am gonna to do some experimenting, I placed a order for Barnes, Hornady, Cast Performance, Oregon Trail bullets. I should have the results in about 2 weeks will post them up. Thanks for all the info. My 460 does not have a muzzle brake so there will be some recoil, but I am used to it with my 500. Which by the way my favorite load is 440gr gas checks with 38gr of 110. I also have some 600gr hp and 700gr coming in soon. Cant wait!!

If you need 'em, I've got 50 new Hornady cases for sale in the classifieds section. Midway only had 100's and I don't need that many. I mean, how many of those monsters can you shoot in a day?

When the recoil begins to chip the bones and erode cartilage in your hand(s), wrist(s) and elbow(s) then its time to send it off to Magnaport Arms for a EDM porting job. Also, if you begin to experience numbness in the grip hand, that's the beginning of nerve damage. When you experience a headache after a range session, or become uncharacteristically sleepy on the way home, that's a form of concussion, usually from muzzle blast, but also from shock waves propagating through the tissues of the arms to the neck and brain. After a few years, arthritis will set in affecting the hand(s) wrists(s) and elbow(s). There are NSAID's that will control the inflammation, and opiates for the severe pain flareups. Both carpal and cubital tunnel injuries are possible, but can be treated with corticosteroid injections and surgery. Remember that the .460 and .500 Magnums develop recoil levels similar to firing a .458 Winchester rifle. Any ill effects are cumulative over time, they take their toll.

I know this from experience having fired thousands of rounds of hand-cannon ammunition. It was fun while doing it though. I even have a box full of dusty trophies and neat belt buckles and hat badges to prove it. I never complained about the recoil, usually just bandaged my bleeding hand or fingers, tightened my shooting glove and adjusted my elbow brace, while waiting patiently for the silhouettes to be reset. Just thought everyone who detonates a cannon in their hand should be aware that discipline and courage will not prevent the inevitable physical effects.
