want to get into reloading

I want to get into reloading but don't know anything about it. What would be the best equipment to get? Where do I get the materials? Any information is helpful. Thanks

Go buy a manual... Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady, the ABC's of Reloading... one or any combination of them. Read them, they provide tons of advice.

First you should buy a few books. The ABC's of reloading is a good book. You then have to figure out how much you need to load. A single stage will load 50 rounds an hour, a turret will load 250 rounds an hour, and a progressive will turn out 500-700 rounds an hour.

ABCs is very descriptive, but doesn't have any load "recipes". If you read it first, the loading process described in the other manufacturer manuals will make more sense. They have the load data for the different rounds in them also. I taught myself with ABCs, Hornady, and a progressive press along with tons of reading online.

Angeles teaches a reloading class a few times a month if I'm not mistaken. They walk you step by step and give you hands on training. I think you reload 38 spl and .223 in the class.

You'll have to get a separate machine for shotgun, but you can use a metallic cartridge press for the pistol rounds. Since your budget is $500, you should probably consider a single stage press (though you can learn on a progressive, it will eat up most if not all of your budget). You'll need additional equipment as well, so don't spend your whole budget on the press.

Forget the books. Meet up with a class or forum member and watch how its done. Get the hang of it. Ask lots of questions. Once you have a feel for it decide what caliber you want to load and how much at one time.

Loading for bolt action bench rifles one bullet at a time is different than loading for 223 1,000 at a time.

Get a book or two and read,read,read. I have been reloading since 1983 and still use my Speer reloading manual number 10 from the early 80's. I am now teaching my 16 year old son about it all. Safety is of utmost importance. Check and double check everything you do. Reloading is very rewarding. I have reloaded 1,000's of rounds with only a manual scale and a uniflow powder charger. I now use a Lyman electronic scale. My stuff is RCBS but many brands are high quality.

I'm also going to suggest the book, but take up an offer from a member here to show you the steps. It will be very helpful. Try to either go with someone who has the equiptment you plan on useing. Ex if you decide single stage go with someone who has one.

If you decide progressive I have a 650 and am willing to show a calgunner.
