truth vs opinion on m855 5.56 62 gr. green tip ammo

i have a few questions/concerns about this M855 ammo. the other day I called P2K range in East San Diego County and asked them about any restrictions on shooting this ammo in their indoor range. He told me they do not allow this ammo beacuase, "it is steel core ammo and it's illegal in Ca. I didn't argue with the guy, just said ok thanks bye. My understanding is that it only has a small steel tip penetrator which makes it not real AP ammo and is 100% legal here in CA, unless you have an AR pistol. Besides i bought them at the gun show from miwall corp, which assured me they're good to go. oh and one more thing, are they ok for reloading? Is the brass new or once fired and does the primer pocket have a crimp?

I got the EXACT SAME FUD when I once tried to order some Lake City M855 from "Dumber than Dirt". It worked out great because later in the week I stopped by Sacramento Black Rifle and saw it for $350 per K and tax was a good bit less than shipping. I went ahead and picked up 4 boxes I was so happy.

As far as I know, ATF has ruled it to be non-AP ammo. So it should be good
        in both rifle and pistols.

Indoor ranges don't like them because the penetrator puts more tear and
        wear on the backstop.

AP ammo means that it has a Full "hardened" steel core. if you get a chance buy a real 3006 Black Tip (easy to find...) and cut it down the center and take out the core. and look at what you see... then cut apart a green tip. you can do that with a pair of cutters. then to see how hard it is put the cores to a grinding wheel and look at the different sparks....

green tip has a Mild steel tip with a lead "knocker"... Ap ammo is legal. ap ammo in pistols is Not.

          hope that helps.

Green tip is Ca legal, but most outdoor range will not let you shoot it during fire season.

are you referring to the SS109 bullet? They're not armor piercing unless you shoot at personal body armor at a distance of a few feet. As most people understand the term armor piercing when applied to ammunition, the SS109 isn't armor piercing.

Green tip is definitely legal to buy and use in CA, BUT many ranges (indoor and outdoor) won't allow it because of the danger of sparking. It is also not allowed in most action rifle competitions because the steel core damages steel plate targets. Good for paper plinking where it's allowed but not good for competition usage.
