    Economical to load 9mm Luger?

Anybody load 9mm luger? Can you describe the economic benefits, if any. Also, is the accuracy benefit significant?

I can buy good 9mm for <.25/round so I'm wondering whether or not to buy a die and reload it.

You can reload it for about 1/2 the cost of walmart WWB. Much cleaner, and way more accurate. If you have a progressive press it's really a no-brainer. I can load 500 rounds in the same time it would take me to drive to walmart and buy them.

I just calculated it. I reload 9mm for just under 12 cents a round. Plated. Lead would be cheaper.

If all you want is to put bullets downrange and your don't care about the quality of ammunition you shoot, then you may be very happy with cheap steel case ammunition with god only knows what kind of bullet, primer, or powder is used.
If you would like to be sure of what you are putting through the gun you spent so much money on, you may decide that cheap is not the way to go.

I can reload a box of 50 rounds for about $4.00 with much better accuracy then any plinking ammo you can buy. By the time someone drives to Walmart I can make about 800 rounds for less than half price. Do your homework first. I never buy craptery ammo anymore.

Well, holy gunpowder! I though I might shave a few cents but heck, seems I need a die set.

noylj, I was referring to (not that it's any better, maybe not by much) the Federal Chapmion, 115 gr. Didn't seem too bad ($12.90 after tax total and cheaper online in 500 count). But if I can reload top quality for <$10/50, I'm way in.

Thanks all. Really appreciate the help!

Rolling your own will be cheaper and better than factory because you can control all of the variables.

Best place I've found for jacketed bullets is Precision Delta. You can get 1000 pcs of 115grn FMJs for $76 delivered. You must order in multiples of 2000 for the free shipping.
The go-to choice for shooters, Precision Delta is a leading manufacturer of ammunition and reloading components. All of our products are proudly manufactured in Mississippi

So for consumables, that makes it:
                  $0.076 FMJ bullet
                  $0.03 primer
                  $0.015 powder
Total @ 12 cents per round or $6 per box.

Lead bullets are a little cheaper:
500 pcs of 115grn LRN for $29.50. Order up to 2000 in the same flat rate box for $13. Use promo code "THR-Original" for a 5% discount. So that would make 2000 pcs $125.10 delivered, or $62.55 per 1000.

So for consumables, that makes it:
                  $0.063 LRN bullet
                  $0.03 primer
                  $0.015 powder
Total @ 11 cents per round or $5.50 per box.

I just got my 03 ffl the other day and used it to get dealer pricing on equipment.

                    Bullseye powder 8lb<100
Enough lead to pour 1100+bullets $20
                    5000 sm pistol primers ~100
Came to around 6 cents a round vs. .19 per rd milwal reloads

I could get it lowrr if I scavenged lead wheel weights, used lighter bullets, or less powder.

Supposedly garages will give you old wheel weights as theyre hazmat, but for the hassle id rathee just pay $20

From my perspective, it's not worth my time to reload CHEAP ammo when I can buy it CHEAPLY. I handload with Hornady XTP's and Speer Gold Dot HP's becuase that's equivalent to my carry ammo. I can handload a buck's worth of high dollar carry ammo for about $0.35. That's worth it to me.

$0.35/rd for Fed 45 ACP? SOLD!!! $0.26/rd for Federal 9mm? SOLD!!! $1.20/rd for Speer 230 gr Gold Dot? RELOAD!!!

                        Regards,
                        Brian in CA
