    Shothsell reloading question

    Hi,
I have few question about shotshell reloading.
#1. Can I use any type of wads with any type of shotshell powder?
#2. What do you think about MEC 9000G and 9000GN?

    Thanks

No, you must use published recipes only. Use only the specific items on the list according to the type of hull that you will load.

    1. First thing you do is decide what brand hull you will load, say Winchester AA for example.
    2. Then decide what amount of lead you will use, the standard trap load is 1-1/8 oz.
    3. Look up the data in load book.
    - Go to the hull, find the weight, and it will give you the powder options that you have.
    4. When you have selected a powder, then look in the table and it will tell you which primer and wad to use as well as how much powder.
    - It may also tell you how much powder to use for different velocities. I would pick something in the middle to allow for fluctuations in your powder meter.
    - Check your meter to see how much variance is actually there before loading anything.

Alliant Promo is a very economical and versatile powder. It is the same thing as Red Dot, so you can use load data for either.
"Promo has the same burn speed as Red Dot, but is more dense, thus requiring a smaller bushing to obtain the same charge weight."

Download the Alliant load data manual here: http://glarp.atk.com/2011/2011_Catal...derCatalog.pdf
Or get a paper copy here: http://www.alliantpowder.com/resources/catalog.aspx

Those look like really nice loaders. I don't have any experience with MEC's, so maybe someone else will give you more info in that dept.

Thanks for the info. Are there any books that you can recommend? I'm planning to use steel shots # 7 or smaller if there is one. I think I should wait with purchase of the press.

The Lyman book listed above is the best. A definite must-have for any shotshell reloader and you can find it at MidwayUSA for $18.

If it doesn't have the load data that you're looking for, then try one of the manuals over at Ballistic Products. You can use the coupon code "FRS6' to get $6.99 shipping.

Wow, I haven't been on the website in months and people are still lost!! Good thing at least you stopped to ask directions. The MEC 9000 presses are great, but forget them. Get a single stage 600 jr. Yep that's right. Do them all one at a time. You will learn so much faster and troubleshoot any problems that come up. It will also encourage you to have a strict operating system of reloading. When you get a progresive, there are soooo many more variables to deal with.
Next you really need to decide what kind of load you want for what kind of shootng. Trap, skeet, sporting clays? Reloading is about saving, saving your time, sanity, and money. Saving more money allows you to shoot more and become a better shooter. The standard of 1 1/8oz. shot is not so much the standard anymore. The price of lead has changed that, and better loads have been developed using 1oz and 7/8oz loads.
Next, you also need to stick to one shell hull. This now depends if you can get them for free at your range or if you have to order them. The new Winchester AA hulls have an insert inside that over time will tear and maybe fall out and lodge in the barrel causing an obstruction and bursting your barrel. If your shooting an over/under shotgun you can use them because you can look down your barrel after the shell is ejected. If you have to order, get the Remington hulls, less headache and more available.
Next after that... Steel shot?? Why do you want to use that?? If you use steel versus lead you will need to buy a steel specific press, as the press and parts are different. Choose your poison carefully!!!
Some of the wads you can use different load weights. I really like the down range products, virgin plastic gives you no plastic build up in your barrel/choke. Any more questions??? PM me!!
