    Gas check question

I know what gas checks on lead bullets are for.. so you can use lead bullets at higher velocities etc.

But, do you put them on regular, store bought lead bullets or are they special lead bullets designed for gas checks? Seems to me adding a gas check would change the diameter of a regular sized bullet, unless it really squeezes in once its crimped.

What extra crimping tool will I need? I dont need to make the crimps themselves like I see on you tube. Im just wondering if its worth my time to do so or if I should just keep shooting at lower verlocities.

I am talking specifically about loading 240g LSWC for a 44 mag

    Thx guys

Gas checks require a bullet with a smaller diameter heel. The outside dimensions of the gas check corespond to bore size.
They are normally installed just before putting the cast bullet through a sizer/lube die.
They are not generally used for pistol ammo. They can be used in pistols of course, just not usually needed.
Unchecked cast bullets are usually considered satisfactory to about 1300-1400 fps, well above most pistol loads.

^I agree with gunboat, although I would like to add that .357 Mag loads with lead bullets frequently use gas checks, as those velocities are not uncommon for that round.

        aww nuts

Ok thanks, I was using the 240g LSWC with 2400 powder and the bullets were going wild when being shot from my marlin 94. They shot fine thru a pistol though.
I have a thousand of the dang bullets but since it seems I cant put a gas check on them Im going to have to use Unique powder to slow the velocity down a bit.

        Thanks again guys
