    7.62x54r recipes

hello all, I am going to be re-loading 7.62x54r soon and wanted to get some direction as to what a good recipe might be for these ageing beauties? I'll be starting my loads with the basic ones from my lee manual also.

First things first, you need to slug the barrel.

    Mine measured was 3.11-3.12 ish.

I just started loading for mine and test a few loads, for me the most accurate was 42 grains varget using Sierra 303 .311 SMK's 174 grains in a 91/30. but they are all unique so your results may vary. This recipe is from my Lyman manual.

Check out Iraqveteran8888's YouTube videos on the Mosin-Nagant. He goes into handloading and discusses some pretty good recipes. With a good handload, those "aging beauties" are known to shoot sub-MOA. Yep, including some of the non-sniper Russian ones.

      +1 to slugging your bore.

Google "the load" with red dot.

it works, good accuracy, but I prefer trail boss if you want reduced loads.

You will wanna slug your bore, its not that hard, but a good rule of thumb is most of the russian stuff will be .311 and most of the finnish stuff will be .308. Mine is .311 but i was using .308 projectiles for the longest time until i finally slugged it. They were still pretty acurate and i know if i have a problem finding .303 british projectiles in the future i can substitute .308 without a problem.

As far as recipe goes i dont remember off the top of my head, i personally like IMR 4895 and the cheapest 165 grn bullets i can find. For a while i had stocked up on sierra 150 grn round noses and used them for both .30-.30 and and 7.62x54r.

I gravitated to 165 grainers when i started using .303 british projectiles

There's a great guide on barrel slugging on 7.62x54R.net.

Without going into too much detail you just hammer a soft oversized lead bullet through your barrel and measure the grooves

150 Gr bullet and 45.1 Gr of Varget will give 2720FPS out of an M-28/76. This is using .308 bullets. Hodgdon has 47 Gr as a starting load giving 2721 FPS and 50.5 going 2985 so Start 10% and work your way up
