What type of ammo do you recommend to use when breaking-in a brand new rifle. To be exact a Remington 700 SPS Stainless .308 Bolt Action Rifle. What Brand and Grain is recommended?

I was told to use the longest bullet you can shoot in your rifle. For my 308 Win caliber rifles, I just use 168 or 175 grain bullets.Comment

as far as im concearned there is no real break in period. my savage shot sub moa from the first round to present. The only difference after break in is how it feeds a round from the magazine. at first you gotta kinda bang the bolt, but for barrel break in ur good to go from round 1.Comment

I shot 20 rounds of cheap ammo and cleaned it after every round, wasnt fun at all. Some people dont believe in break in period. Avoid overheating barrel regardless of the ammo. Shoot three shot groups and let the barrel cool between groups. If shooting high velocity Magnum, let the barrel cool down after every shot. Heat increases erosion and wear in rifle barrel. limit to 20-30 rounds range time.Don't take refuge in the false security of consensus.

"Break-in period"??? Do not let it get to hot to hold the barrel in your hand. The most important thing I ever learned was to talk nice to the firearm during the break-in period. Yes you must talk nice to it and not hurt its feeling.A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

When I 1st got my R700 I shot PMC and Magtech 150gr stuff. If I were reloading I would have shot my own loads.Comment
