    RG 4895 powder problem

I had a failure to ignite a case of RG 4895 today. The primer fired, but the powder just did not ignite. The bullet lodged in the rifling and came out easily. The powder, which of course spilled when I extracted the case, looked mostly like it did when I took it out of the container, but there were a couple of "clumps" and some discolored powder. Moisture? Oil?

Does anyone have experience with this powder? Before I pull all of the other rounds I have loaded, it would be nice to have some more information. Should I be using a magnum primer with this powder? I was the one who opened the power container for the first time, and non of my other handloads have ever had this problem.
Thanks in advance for any help.

        All,
RCBS lube on an RCBS pad. Outside of the case only. Same as all of my other reloads.

        CCI 200 primer.

I have been using RG4895 that was purchased a few years ago from Wideners in my Garand. No issues.

If you tumble your brass after depriming . Make sure your flash hole is clear of any media.I learned the hard way, but after loading for 30yrs and more things like this happens.

I use RG4895, used a couple of pounds of it so far. I use it in a .308 Win. Precision rifle. I've had no issues with it other than it throwing a good flash, even out of a 24" barrel. I've found a couple of 155 and 168 loads that are very accurate.

Peter, where in CA are you located?

I'll buy that RG4895 from you for $12/lb.

I love that stuff, and I have been trying to find more of it.

I've seen clumps when bullet-pulling twice.

Once was related to too much case lube present. That was fixed with (literally 5 minutes of) tumbling in dry media after sizing. I've never had a fail to fire yet. Maybe I caught it in time. Maybe they fire anyways. Maybe the powders aren't sensitive (4350). Maybe there's something else at play. Maybe I was (and possibly am!) just lucky.

Once was related to wet cleaning and loading too fast after cleaning, not letting the case insides dry enough. THe outsides dried completely, were BONE dry. inside was still wet. that lead to a HUGE failure rate, but admittedly 100% (and I mean 100%) of the failures were deactivated primers for me. A mistake I've never ever repeated. dead primers suck.

I hope you find your root cause.
