Neutralizing a .50 bmg round.

How do make this round inert? I have very little reloading knowledge, but I'm trying to learn. What would be the best way to render it inert, I really have no intention of shooting it, and only bought it as a novelty item...I still can't believe how massive it is.

The issue I think, is finding big enough calipers(?) to grab the bullet out so I can empty the powder pop the primer out, and the recrimp the bullet back into the brass.

Any suggestions? I've heard I can leave the primer in motor oil overnight, and this will render it inert as well.

you can pull the bullet with some pliers wrapped with electical tape dump the powder in a little pile and toss on a match

then insert the case in a 12g break open and pop the primer into a pile of rags(preferably ones not soaked in any volatile liquids)

I'd see if someone would trade you a round they loaded with no powder and already fired primer for your live round. There are plenty here who reload.

I used a bench vise, feels much safer when pulling the projectile. Use a rag or leather to keep from making jaw marks on the bullet. wiggle back and forth till you loosen the neck enough to pop the bullet out. Piece of cake.

I'd see if someone would trade you a round they loaded with no powder and already fired primer for your live round. There are plenty here who reload.

And this^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ DON'T mess with a 50 BMG without the proper tools of knowledge. That primer is very powerful, if you don't properly kill it and it goes off while you are trying to deprime, it can injure you.

50BMG is hard to pull as it is sealed in with a tar. To make things easy just PM me your address info and I will load a dummy round and send it to you. Or you could just keep it as is. It will do you no harm.

FYI the primer is no big deal. I had one go off when depriming a live one that was not properly seated. Just a pop but one that will startle you at 2AM. No damage to anything but my pride.

I used a 1/2" deep socket craftsmen attached to a 3/8" drive extension (for leverage). Fits the bullet nicely and you use it to wiggle the bullet enough to free it from the brass case without too much distortion or damage to the bullet. You would have to resize the case if you want to reseat the bullet (do not forget to deactivate the primer!)

Drill a hole all the way through case and dribble out the powder.

Buy an Inert one to begin with. Other than that, take one of the above gentlemen up on their offer to do it for you. Drilling into a case without proper knowledge of how to inert stuff in not a good thing to practice. As the old EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) saying, at the old EOD School in Indian Head Md., was "Initial Success, or Total Failure". A low order detonation won't kill you with a .50 cal, but it will ruin your day.
