PLEASE HELP ME GET A GRASP ON THIS

Recently decided to begin reloading (have only ordered a reloading book and nothing else). I AM FREAKING OVERWHELMED. I've read all the threads I can find in this forum but Im just uncertain.

My goal first and foremost is to reload for my M1 Garand. My 9mm as well but I'm focused solely on the M1 for right now. For now I want my reloading to be KISS (keep it simple stupid). I don't mind doing single stage going slow. I found this which seems like a decent start. AND MONEY IS A FACTOR.

    Questions:

    1. Can I get 9mm dies to use on this press as well?

    2. It seems like it comes with quite a bit of stuff, but comparing it to the list in the "reloading 101" thread this kit is still missing a lot. What is absolutely necessary?

    3. Yes I'm getting ahead of myself, I'm just excited and confused all at once.

    thanks

you need to add calipers, if you are loading rifle cartridges, you will need a case trimmer. other than that, it looks like everything you need.

with a grand, you want to load specific loads. IIRC, you want to stick with IMR4895 and 150-168 grain boolets,

look around for garand specific recipes.

yes, you can get 9mm dies

Is the tumbler for used brass? (I have CMP 30-06 that I am saving the brass from), so these would need to be tumbled?

Also I just got on Midway just to look at prices for components. I didn't see 30-06 specific bullets, will anything in the .30 caliber section work? I'll look up some Garand recipes, or someone can post theirs (i'll do a search too)

Press is fine for both rifle and pistol - I would not bother with the twist lock feature tho.
You are smart to understand there is a big difference in what is nice and what is NEEDED.
        you need:
manual - one of several are ok.
        press -
die set - 2 die rifle needed - like lee rgb 3 die nice.
shellholder for each different cartridge case.
        pad and lube, or spray
prime method, if not on press -
scale, beam is good - scoop or spoon to put powder on scale - trickler is nice.
small funnel - powder to case.
vernier to measure case length and cartrigde length.
rag and solvent to wipe off oily residue when finished -
That is what you NEED - all else makes the job easier or faster -

Try to find someone to mentor you a mite --

I would love to find someone to show me the ropes, I'd even bring them a case of something! Not too many calgunners in the Santa Maria/San Luis area.

The KISS for the M1 Garand would be IMR4895 powder(that is what the rifle was designed around). I will need to look up the M1 Garand load but I think it was 48grs. Double check before you load. Get .308 diameter 150gr bullets or 147FMJ bullets. The 150gr bullets can be FMJ/soft point or target(usually 155gr). You can use mil spec primers or just regular primers. "I" would suggest "small base dies" for the semi-auto rifle and Carbide type for the straight walled pistol dies(9mm/45ACP/38/357/44spec and mag 45LC/454casull etc). No need to lube with the carbide type dies. Also I do not crimp my rifle loads and they have never given me trouble in any rifle/load.

You do not "have to" tumble your brass but it does clean them up better than not doing so.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

                I'm in Nipomo.

My last concern, is how much money will I actually save by making 30-06 loads? Has anyone priced their reloads to a "cents per round" count for M1 garand type loads? I'm wondering if I should just keep using CMP for now.

you will save money depending how much you shoot. if every now in then, you wont save anything for along time with the up front cost of it all. But this is a hobby and they all cost lol

if you only count the cost of, cases, primers, powder 1lb=7000grs, bullets. compare that to what it would cost you to buy them from a store, you can save half if not more by reloading.

I will pm you thats only 30 mins from me.

Fwiw my local range has a reloading store with a 2 day class. Its $125, seems a bit much to me but there it is. I may take it.

I get mine from cabelas or midway depends on how much i need and price.

for powder in primers there is a hazmat fee cabelas only charges 1fee $20-25 midway will charge you twice 1 for powder $20-25 and 1 for primers $20-25

I go in on powder and primers so we can cut the hazmat fee down i think there is 3 of us that need powder or primers so its only $8.33 per person.

we dont have any decent reloading stores around here, or i would use them.

I HIGHLY suggest you look into a weekend NRA metallic reloading class or get someone to walk you through the basics in person. You can get yourself in trouble very quickly with this stuff when operating in a knowledge vacuum. SLOSA or Rangemaster (if they're still around) might have classes or can at least put you in touch with people.
