    1 rifle powder

I am looking for opinions on powders i would like to buy in bulk and i know 1 powder is not going to be the best for every round or gun for that matter but if you were to choose 1 what would it be? I am currently using imr 4895 for my 30-06 308 223 . thanks for any replies

30-06, .308Win, .223Rem........are these the ONLY cartridges you intend to reload?

If so, H4895, Varget, IMR4064, R15 will work reasonably well. Not necessarily ideal but workable.

I'm in the same situation as you are. I have a jug of 748 and a jug of H335. At the moment I'm making due of the powders I have. I load .223, 30-06 and just beginning with 7.5x55. I will shoot my test loads for the 7.5x55 (using h335) and see how it goes. I might end up buying 4895 or 4064 in the near future.

i have used most of the above mentioned powders. Varget would be my choice if only 1 was to be chosen. In my experience, not only it can be used on most rifle calibers, it's easier to meter than 4064, RL15. Burns cleaner than 748 & H335 in most cases and less temperture sensitive than others.

I would buy H-4895 or Varget. It is one of Hodgdon's "Extreme" powders, less temperature sensitive. It is short grained and will flow through a powder hopper better than it's IMR counterparts. It can be used for the .223 or 30/06 (for up to 165 gr. bullets).

If I'm paying retail for a powder ($22.00 + per #), it makes sense to buy a powder that is not temperature sensitive. After I thin out some of my old powders, I will buy Hodgdon powders in their "Extreme" line.

          For blasting ammo for the .223 & .308 Win., I like the surplus WC-844 @ about $100.00 for 8#.

I use currently H4895 and Varget. I'm switching everything to Varget for 30-06, 303 British after finishing up my 1/2 lb of H4895.

well, here is the reality for you. I've been reloading for 20 years. I tried and failed probably like many others, to find the 'one' powder for everything I need. Truth is, part of the fun of reloading is trying different components. 1 single component at a time allows you to focus on the process when you're starting out.

                  I'm probably a poor example.
But I not only use one powder, but one of 3 bullets in my 30-06 loads.
Reason is I have a pet load developed for accuracy.
When everything is dialed in, why switch?
47.5 grains of IMR4895, 110 grain Sierra bullet in Spire point, RN, or HP.
                  Normally I prefer CCI primers.
So why would I fool with other powders or loads for that rifle?
IF I was to need more powder, I'd want to stick with what I know.
Used to use 4895 in the 300 savage, too.
But when you have what works for you, no need to ping around.

I settled on surplus WC 844 powder for $85 per jug at hi-techammo.com

They pay Hazmat fee if you buy 4-jugs.

I bought 8! HAHAHAH! Kind of half-regret it now that I'm jobless.
