The Federal red box from Walmart have been using small primers for a while now. I don't load 45, so no suggestions. I save all my brass for friends, that's why I know.

The general consensus is to load them with a SPP the same way as you would a LPP.

Both Federal & Blazer (maybe a couple of others) have been using the small pistol primers for a while now. For reloading, use the regular load data but work your way up from the minimum as normal. Most of the reports I've seen haven't shown a real difference, at least not for target ammo.

FWIW, most of the Federal I've bought through Wal Mart have had the small pistol primers.

Yup, been saving the ones I've been getting. Now I know my fresh stash of brass from the ones I've been reloading

One of the guys that frequents this forum had a great idea, he saves his SPP .45 ACP brass for "lost brass" competitions.

If you don't shoot in competition, just load them up for when you go to a range that is crowded and you are not getting all your brass back. The last batch I shot, a guy in a nearby lane had a buddy continuously sweeping behind everyone as we shot. I kind of smiled thinking about how he was swiping all my brass I didn't want anyway. Made my groups better too.

Ooh, that would get me pissed if that happened while I was shooting.

Yeah had the same experience when I first started relaoding. I was like WTF and later realize it was spp (Federal). Winchester NT also has small primers. You can also check out 1911 forum.com and see what load data they are using.

I've done some research and if I decide to load it I will just use starting loads.
What's weird to me is why they even make it. Its not like its cheaper or anything.

It uses a different priming compound; a lot hotter-burning I think. (It might blow out the larger cup of a LP primer.) Just sort them and save them. They might come in handy some day when you're all setup already with small primers. Or if they are the way of the future, you'll have a head start on your stash.

I'm gonna hold onto them for a while, the brass itself is heavier then normal 45acp brass by quite a bit.

You'll find that instead of "Federal" headstamp there are dots on each side of the "Federal."

I've been sorting by headstamp so the SPP brass is just a minor PITA.

The boxes for regular and "NT" (Non Toxic with the SPP) are identical except that the NT boxes are slightly smaller.

Winchester sells the same stuff named "Win Kleen."

The NT ammo is meant for indoor ranges that don't have really good ventilation. The bullets are also fully clad. No exposed lead.

I had to check your location.
I've been known to sweep up but always ask the shooters nearby if they're saving their brass first.

As I understand it the SPP put out less of the toxic stuff than LPP.

There are two types of SPP 45. Large flash hole and small flash hole.

If you have the small flash hole SPP 45 and load it to normal LPP 45 you can expect a decrease of about 50fps in velocity.

If you have the large flash hole SPP 45 and load it to normal LPP 45 the differences are negligible. Very slight difference.

The interesting thing about SPP 45 is that there are a couple articles out there claiming better accuracy than LPP. Personally I have done a lot of experimenting with velocities but haven't messed around with accuracy testing yet.

I do however primarily only load SPP 45 nowadays. I find it much more convenient.
