    Walmart 223 ammo question

I just noticed at my local Wallymart that there selling American Eagle 223, 55grn ammo in a black and white box. On the box it also says AR15 on it. Its going for about $5.60 something for 20 rounds. Does anybody know if this stuff is brass or steel cased. The price sounds not bad if its brass cased. Nobody around to open the ammo cabinet last night so I just left wondering. Thanks-

Is this the federal ae stuff? I know some crappy brass I have been collecting is from wallmart. it has the f.c. stamp about about 60% of it is too short (once fired) to be reloaded.

        It's brass, and it's GARBAGE.

The most common problem with it is primers popping out and getting stuck in the chamber or fcg. Ask me how I know.....

I bought a case of 1000 and went through 800 of it between 3 rifles without a hiccup. Then, in a single box we had 7 bad rouns out of 100.

        Unacceptable to me, but YMMV

At that price I would purchase a box or two and see if your rifle likes it

consider it plinking ammo and give it a shot

I know that American Eagle ammo is Fedreral bargan ammo. I was thinking if its marketed as AR15 ammo that the primers would be crimped in but Im not sure on that. I think I will try a few boxes just to see how they run in my ARs. Its quite a bit cheaper than the 100 round value pack Federal ammo that they sell at Walmart and my rifles eat that stuff pretty good. Thanks for the replies...

I purcahsed a 100 round box of the stuff from Sacramento Black Rifle for something like 29+tax. AR ate all but one, had a small dent so it didn't feed right so I hand fed it into the chamber closed the bolt and it joined its friends down range.

The stuff with the short brass i have been finding that was Marked F.C. had crimped primers.

I have like 400 pieces of brass that measure only 1.74X and a handful that measure 1.73X and this is all once fired brass. Maybe these are federals reject brass cases?

I have fired a couple thousand of that particular brand through my SU-16 now. No problems, other than two FTE's which were easily cleared. Had no trouble reloading any of the brass. All of them were normal size.

At that price, I'd say buy it, buy plenty of it, and keep the brass. .223 headspaces on the shoulder anyway, so if the brass was originally a little too short, just adjust your sizing die appropriately, and things should be OK.

I guess, it might still work, but I full length resize for my AR, so there's not really any adjustment. You basically just end up with an out of spec round. Apparently they fired the first time ok, so I supposed they should be good again later. Maybe I will get some cheaper bullets and use them for those. Or just toss them since there's plenty of other brass out there. I certainly won't be buying any of it though.

Well I just bought 5 boxes of the stuff to try. It really doesnt look that bad but Ill see how they work in a couple of weeks. I got one AR that seems to eat all garbage ammo just fine with its Olympic arms barrel. My other one has a Daniel Defense barrel that seems to be a little finicky on what I feed it. I will test both. Brass will be saved for future reloading if its good. Thanks again for all the info...

Its what I use - got 400 rounds at GanderMountain with a coupon awhile back for $99.99. So far it works and shoots pretty accurate. I've reloaded 200 rounds out of the 400 and they seem fine also. Brass is pretty good and the primer pockets are not crimped. Just picked up another box from a Calgunner this morning.
