.40 S&W Case length?

I was prepping my cases and noticed most coming in at .8435 - .8495 those were my nickel. My brass is coming in mostly under .8435, I wanted to ask if this is normal for alot of those shorter cases. I figured I would probably get 5%-10% but I am getting around 70% that are shorter. What should I do?

I personally wouldn't worry about. Then again, I don't do case prep on .40s.

After a little googling:
Max length = .850
Trim length = .840 (depending on which manual is used)

So you're right in the middle there - everything will be fine.
I've never actually trimmed a piece of pistol brass before, but the specs support your measurements.

Hmmm, I guess I must be overthinking it then. Thanks for all the info. Guess I can save the cases and not scrap them

The only handgun brass I ever had a need to trim was brass that was loaded in a revolver... both in 357 magnum and 10 mm... Yep, I loaded them both so many times they were too long for the chambers of the revolvers in question... so I switched to 38's and 40's (for the 610) and have never had to trim another case ever again..
