Because they're High Explosive, Incendiary, Armor Piercing (HEIAP) rounds. Probably each one qualifies as a DD under CA, if not Federal law--but I'm not gonna bother looking that up.

Actually they are quite a bit more than just API.

I use to sell at the Reno gun show that was at the Reno Hilton and I came across a guy from Oklahoma that sold these things for about 25 bucks a pop.

He also had a blue and red tipped 308 round that was a High Explosive.

At the time 10 years ago I bought a few of the 308 rounds he had but never sampled the 50's.

probably not a good idea even though I highly doubt they're the real thing... I saw an ad on gunbroker where some guy was selling 308 "raufoss rounds" but there is no such thing (they only make them in 50BMG), apparent some guy had just taken some 308 bullets hollowed them out and put powdered zinc inside and painted the tips, and he was charging an arm and leg for them.

They are still in current production, I don't know why they are so expensive except that the must be available only to military. I bet the tracer versions are really expensive! No matter we cant have them here.
