I don't think you will need the lead hardens tester ( I have never used one)
also if you are going to be casting 45 I would move up to the 20# pot (I have a 10# and that thing eats lead when doing 45)

start small you can add other things as you find you need them. And do check out the link in the above posts.

i beleive i have a good source of lead and i'll drop the hardness tester. i'll llook into the 20lbs capacity one but i am trying to do this for cheap to test it out. do i need the lube and size kit with that mold as well? honestly i dont know much at all about this i am learning and i will not attempt it until i feel confident in my abilities i'm all about safety

if you don't like it you will get more of your $$ back for the 20lbs than the 10lbs (at lest from what I have seen) then sell well on Craigslist, that's were I got my 10lbs pot and paid $45 for it but no tax or shipping.

as for the lee sizer I would get it shouldn't be much more than $20 and you will get enough lube to do 1k+

an old hammer handle? would any object work for that lets say like the handle of the lead dipper? or does it need a little more beef to it than that

it will get beat-up and it needs to be a little more beefy. but even part of an old shovel handle will work, anything wood (that you don't care about) that is 8-12" and a diameter that fits in your hand....

One other thing, if you are going to use Wheel Weights I recommend not melting them in a bottom poor pot, the road dirt will get stuck in the spout and it is a pain in the A** to clean.

I use an old cast-iron skillet on a camp stove to cleanup my lead then into a muffin pan goes the clean lead.

I made my first 1k 45’s for under $150 for everything.

(but I had the camp stove, cast-skillet and muffin pan) hated the skillet never could get it to season and the wife still can’t find that muffin pan.

What is your source of lead?

If you buy ready to go wheel weight ingots from the castboolits selling page, then you can skip the rcbs smelting pot and the lee ingot mold. They are available for about $1 per pound delivered.

I'd also recommend the 20 lb Lee pot and the sizer that you already picked out. The sizer will help you be more consistent.

You could smoke you mold with a lighter and lose the mold release, but I bought that too and it lasts a long time. Use some candle wax or sawdust for flux and you look like you're good to go.
