    "neck sizing" pistol brass?

Not proper terminology, but I am sure it gets the concept across.

I notice that my pistol sizing die really works the brass. There is significant diameter change that occurs.

So after "fire forming" the brass to your chamber (this is a revolver over here) Do you guys just resize around the bullet seat depth plus a little more? Or do you still resize the entire powder chamber portion of the brass?

Straight pistol cases I re-size with a carbide die the full length.

For .38s I resize minimally, only about as far down as the depth the bullet will be seated to. You could even do less than that, as long as they chamber smoothly and the bullet has a good tight fit in the case you should be good to go. I always full length resize brass for semi autos.

Same here & I use Hornady One Shot lube.

OP,Are you shooting some overly hot loads?
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I have not tried the "neck sizing" route.

I did try using some "fire formed" brass with oversized lead bullets, but even with a few thousandths oversized I still didn't have enough neck tension to keep the bullets in their place.

I have never used any lube when using carbide pistol dies, but enough guys have posted such great reports, I bought some One Shot at the gun store today and will give it a try next loading session.

I size all pistol brass full length. Never really considered anything else.

I'm also gonna get some case lube. Resizing 9mm & .45ACP that's been through those Glock slopbuckets...

If I had a neck sizing die in 32-20, I'd use it to load for my S&W revolver. But, for striaght walled cartridges, I'll stick to FL sizing.

I full length re-size straight wall pistol cases. Said brass usually fails at the mouth area, so I don't think you'd be extending case life by doing otherwise.

No sir, still following all proven and documented (by bullet and powder manufacturer) recipes.

One thing abiout 38 spl brass that develops small splits at the case mouth.. there is nothing that says you need shoot full length 38's in your firearms.. there are several ppl here who shoot ICORE and use 38 short and long colts in their 627's with good results to 50 yards.. Any 38 with a small split at the case mouth goes into a bin for later trimming to a shorter length for this specific use.. I've trimmed nickel plated FC brass to .900" and used it several more times after it split at the longer full sized length and it keeps on shooting..

Would annealing straight wall pistol brass right at the mouth area extend brass life any?

I've sometimes neck sized .45 colt. Chambers tend to be loose and dies tend to resize much smaller. I don't know if it improves brass life, but it does have the potential (depending on specific dimensions) to improve accuracy.
