    Non-Steel-Cased AK Ammo?

I'm really interested in getting an AK, but my normal range (Burro Canyon) doesn't allow steel-cased ammo during fire season. Is 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 ammo available without steel, and when can I get it without paying an arm and a leg?

Thanks for your help, and hopefully I found the right section.

You're reading the rules wrong. They allow steel case ammo even during the wet months. This is their policy. The rule is kind of confusing but I think steel case is permitted. Just no steel in the bullet.

Steel-jacketed and bi-metal ammunition is not allowed during the dry months of the year due to fire danger. However, we do allow this ammunition to be used during the wet season. The wet months vary from year to year and we will inform you of the start and finish of each season. You can check your ammunition for the presence of steel by touching a magnet to the bullet. Keep in mind that both tracer (orange tip) and steel-core (green tip) ammunition is never allowed.

I think it's no steel in the projectile.

You can get a case of about 1000 Yugo 7.62x39 for about 240 dollars shipped. Stuff is corrosive so cleaning your rifle after shooting is a good idea. Also, no steel in this stuff.

So virtually all of the milsurp stuff should be fine to shoot?

If you take a magnet to the tip of the cartridge, and it sticks, it's a no-go.

Nope. Virtually all milsurp in that caliber has steel in the bullet jackets. The only milsurp that has no steel in the projectiles is Yugoslavian surplus. The most popular commercial brands of ammo in that caliber (Wolf and the various Bear brands) also use steel jacketed projectiles.

its only the projectiles that can not attract a magnet
the casing could be any type of metal you want

its only the bullet that matters

though a VERY LARGE majority of steel cased ammo contain bullets that do attract a magnet
