    Who loads for 45-70?

Just started loading for 45-70. I started out with some 400 & 500 hard cast but I don't like the lead in the barrel. So I ordered some 400 Speer and some 450 Barnes. The Barnes are WAY long. So it has become a compressed load AND I can't get them deep enough into the case to meet OAL.

Yes I have come to the realization that even though these are .458 that they are not meant for 45-70 but for .458 Winchester Magnum, .458 Lott etc.,

Is there any way I can get these to work in 45-70 case?

    Thanks!

I have great accuracy with Remington 405 gr bullets and IMR 3031.

What level gun are you loading for. I load for my hi-wall browning which is level 3 in load manuals. I have loaded 450gr and 500gr barnesx, my favorite is 305gr from Rancho gun room o0ff of zinfandel, Bear creek bullets which are covered with a moly coating.I use Re-7

I load 70 grains of blackpowder under a 405 hardcast bullet for my sharps rifle. I tried some rounds loaded with smokeless and but felt they had too much pressure to safely shoot in my rifle. I like BP for my rifle.
