Wilson Case Trimmer?

I second the possum hollow with the Power Adapter fitting for a drill. I run mine in a drill press and with two hands (one feeding the other) and I can probably trim 5 brass in 10 seconds. Then put your case chamfer/deburring tool in the drill press and run all the brass through again. I should have bought the PH trimmer a long time ago.

I typically shoot the AR from a Bench :P

There is a massive difference between shooting an AR-15 off a bench and what I call or what is known as "The Bench Rest Crew". These guys will shoot a dime size group at 200 yards and call themselves failures. Thieir firearms could be displayed at The Louvre". Plinking is not in their vocabulary. If you said, "Oh no they didn't make that shot"", their targets would say, "Oh yes they did". They're crazy, They're wierd, they are in a league all their own.They are the World's Most Interesting Handloaders (and Shooters).

All joking aside, I think the Possum Hollow will serve your purpose till you figure out what kind of bench you want to build or how much you are going to shoot or money you want to spend.

Wilson is the best choice

Go with the Wilson since it is designed to work as a lathe. There are fewer parts to go out of adjustment. My RCBS trimmer has repeatedly gone out of adjustment and caused case mouths to not be trimmed square; going out of adjustment is caused by all the various screw parts coming loose.

Wilson's case trimmer is also compact.

The Wilson trimmer is SLOW!! Folks use it for handloading precision rifle cartridges. I just trimmed a couple hundred on mine and it took forever. Heck, i spread the trimming over 3 days.... After sizing, you gotta individually take each case, put it in the bushing, plop it on the trimmer chassis, hand crank the cutter, then conk out the trimmed casing. The thing is super accurate and consistent, but slow as heck.

Since you're shootin an AR, get the Possum Hollow trimmer. All ya gotta do is size, then pick up a case and shove it in the drill press/portable drill powered trimmer. It will be significantly faster than the Wilson. If you have to trim more than a few cases and are on a budget, this is the way to go.

Could I end up with problems with seating the bullets since the PH gauges from the neck/shoulder and not the bottom of the case?

Am I even getting this right?

Where does the Hornady fit in as far as accuracy and speed? Looks like you can hookup a drill to that one as well?

Yes, the PH trimmer gauges from the neck/shoulder. This is not a problem since you have already resized the brass and the neck/shoulder should then be exact to specified factory specifications. If it is/was not to specifications then you will end up with a round that either has a buckled case (around the shoulder) or otherwise won't fit the Lyman case gauge.

Seating doesn't have much to do with case length.

Get a good pair of calipers and learn how to load first. Worry about buying a trimmer later. If you're really hard up on buying a trimmer, just buy the Possum Hollow trimmer and think about your other options later. It's like 20 bucks and you'll have it around when you start needing to trim.

For rifle cartridges keep this in mind - note that you don't necessarily need to trim every time you load... the basic order of loading is...

Pick up range brass or buy new brass
Lube it
Size/deprime it
Check its length to see if it is within spec. You might want to change the length for accuracy reasons
Possibly trim it
Possibly chamfer/bevel the case mouth if ya trimmed it
Prime it
Throw a powder charge in
Seat bullet - sometimes you combine crimping with this step
You can also do crimping as a separate last step as well.

Alright PH trimmer it is. I just got my stuff last night. I went ahead and temp mounted the press to my bench, decapped and clean the primer pockets on some brass from the last range trip. It's tumbling right now with some crushed Wallnut from Petsmart.

Need to dive into the reloading book next.

After using my Sinclair primer pocket uniformers chucked into my drill press, I think I will enjoy the PH trimmer as well. Those little Uniformers worked great!

Too bad it's out of stock everywhere though :P

One more question though. Do I need the drill adapter if I'm going to chuck this into a drill press with a 3/4th inch chuck?

I chuck it up in a small 7.2v Lithium Dremel power screwdriver. I can easily get 100 cases out of one recharge, I usually stop before then because my hands get sore or I get bored. The only problem I've had with it is the hex stud is a loose fit into the drill, but stuffing a little paper towel or tape in there takes care of that.

I find about 1/2 my cases don't need trimming in any given batch.

If found that if I spread a large towel over me, I can do this in the comfort of my easy chair while I'm watching something on TV, with a cold beverage within reach and my dog laying at my feet.

I have the Forster trimmer for my .308 and 1903A3. I started reloading for my Garand and got tired if trimming 100 cases. I later bought the power adapter to replace the handle. Then I read about the Possum Hollow and drill adapter and hundreds of cases...no, actually thousand(s) later I'm so glad I got it. Now if they could make one for the 30 Carbine...
